Progressing nicely!

Pull the pin on the gear, and it retracts (once) with the help of a spring or rubber band. No gear extension for landings

Wood is on it's way for cowl and canopy plug.

It seems longer than a couple weeks since last post. I've been busy with other projects. Currently, I have the gear done, 5/32" wire. I could not bend it as much as the drawing above shows without breaking it. And I've never had much luck with heating wire and trying to regain the correct hardness properties. So I went with a 90 degree bend. About all I have to do is figure out how I want to pull the release pin to retract the gear,.. that is,.. if I want to use a 90 degree bellcrank or a straight bellcrank and how to mount the servo. The pics below show a rubber band for retracting tension. I'll be using a spring eventually. I have put the stringers in place this morning (not sanded yet).

Major work on the fuselage is finished. Wing attach points will wait until I have the wing center section done. I'll be adding gussets here and there maybe. My balsa arrived so I can start carving the cowl and canopy plugs. The canopy will be vacuum formed with a soft aluminum tube frame will nest inside it.

I'm getting the cowl and canopy started. I'll probably get the plugs finished then move on to the empennage. I'll save the actual vacuum forming and fiberglass work until later.

Nice work Fred!
You are making a real mould then or will you use the balsa shaped as your cowl? Keep it going...

Hi Noel,....yes, I'll be making a mold and doing a fiberglass cowl. That's the only way to go.

I've got the cowl very close to being finished. But,... something just didn't look right. The cowl looked too wide, the canopy angles didn't "agree" properly where they meet the cowl. I went back to the 3-view, back to the pictures, back to the several factory drawings I have. Then I saw my mistake. The nose tapers in at the front. The 3-view I have shows the sides parallel. Early drawings I made were made according to the 3-view, later revisions were made after getting better drawings, but was overlooked. >Now<, I have to go back, remove the firewall, bring the fuselage sides together more, reshape canopy plug, slice cowl plug in half, remove a section and glue back together. Luckily, I don't have to get into the landing gear mount area. It starts to curve just fwd of that.

Geez, I was going to have a nice weekend building the tail, now I have lots of rework to do.

Not anymore. I used to think, " Ah, a 3-view. I've got it made". But now I understand.

When you do nothing Fred, you can't make mistakes!!
But we do build things out of just a drawing now with little other info yet. Collecting info on a plane is one thing, and then make it work an other. And of course there are holidays and other projects that makes you forget ...
But this will be OK when changed as you are going to.

You are right Noel. I'm finished making the alteration. And very happy I took the entire day to fix it. It came out very good. The firewall is now 1.25" narrower, and the cowl is 1/2" narrower. It's looking very good. Pics when the filler is dry and it's sanded,.... then I can move on to the tail.

My goal for this week is to get the tail and fuselage construction done and sanded, ready to cover. Next week I'll start the wing, or maybe take a break and make some Christmas presents. No,.. not model airplanes.

Hi Fred,
This looks more like it. The few pictures we have show that you are close now. I asked for more detailed pictures from München.
I do hoop I get them before you have finished your model.
Anyway this looks like it will be a great model to fly.
Now you take a brake and enjoy playing Santa

Yeah, starting to look like a motor glider now. The cowl is hardest part to define. These are the only pics I can find (and even at that, there are two or three different shapes). The 3 view is useless for this. I'm going to do my best, then set it aside until after I finish the wings, before I make the mold. I'm trying to model the one in the colored photo. I need to round the top more I think.
