Chinese Junk lug rig
Are there any Junks out there ? Id love to see a build.
There isn't much information out there compared to the norm, but Ive found some sites if any one is interested. The boats themselves are interesting but, its taking a little to appreciate the aesthetics. I due find the sails kinda cool though and may use them in place of originals. I read they don't point up wind very well nor due they sail great in low wind. But some savvy sailors having experience in water two stories high like the idea of two sheet control lines and not having to get out of the cock pit to tie things down or remove sails in emergency cases. Also mast remains flexible taking some jolts away from the hull along with they say a lower point of pressure on the canvas. (good for dramatic wind change of scale down boats ?) Which brings me the idea of being able to adjust the sails easily for heavier wind in RC. remotely or at the side of the pool. Also the design is such that the full battens shape the sail rather than having to build shape into sail (this also allows for cheaper canvas than Dacron etc.. In real boat it cuts cost greatly as you need not spend cash on stainless steel or stays as the mast is free standing. I don't know how important sail shape is at scaled down size, but I assume it merits attention. The subject gets a little controversial on some site in regard to Marconi vs lug rigs and so forth. Any how I don't plan on seeing a wave greater than the boat nor am I considering long cruising any time soon. I just think it would be an interesting build. I cant see it not sailing decent. Has any one tried ? ............... I had to go food shopping and picked up a couple of arrows for experiment, aluminum and very light. They could be screwed together to make a mast or preferably battens for this junk rig @ three dollars each not to bad. Last edited by THE HORSEMAN; Nov 04, 2009 at 11:12 PM. |

Give me a day or two & I'll update my 1/24 sha chuan thread:
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=972712 Regarding the battens, I used 1/8" & 3/16" popular dowels & sanded them halfway down on my belt sander to allow enough flex for the sail shape. Steamed bamboo strips used to make strand flooring also work well but I doubt you can get these locally. I have a large file on junks & their rigs including several plans. Send me a PM with your email address & I'll be happy to get these out to you. |

Ive been a lot of talk and no boat on this forum so far, purchased plans for the English Britannia RC, but then my son decided he wanted a junk sail, found this on his B-Day . I really like and more important the boy likes and approved the build ! Hope the folks that where helping aren't disappointed after all the inquiries on the Brit.
http://www.sailboatlistings.com/view/13843 "50' Chinese Junk balanced lug rig " Location Oregon / 50' Length / 16' Beam / 3' Draft / $228,500 Price Its the studio of a sculptor. After changing hands many times, lastly as a brothel of all things, it was in great need of repair. He was kind enough to allow me to visit for measurements, but as he is across the country in Oregon drat ! Ill have to decline the trip , unless one of you pirates would like to take my place. Ive asked for some more pictures of the hull and possible rebuild areas he had worked on. Ill post if it interests any one. The deck looks easy enough Ill have to think out the rails as they will be delicate. I may choose to add my own twist to the design but don't want to stray far, as it looks just fin. Yes Herrmill, Id like your file on the junks any thing on the sheeting and the hull building would be most helpful as I'm not sure Ill get any good pictures of the hull above. Thank you in advance. You mentioned your junk build was the first work, looked through the build very nice, much to think about ! Ill be happy if mine looks half that. Woody , was it difficult to have your models stand still while sculpting out looks like you spared nothing, my son was really impresst. Ive stopped procrastinating and will begin collecting materials next couple of weeks as I find information. Thanks for the posts guys hop to share what I'm learning soon. I must share this design I found too ( http://www.kastenmarine.com/jasmine.htm) look for ( The 48' aluminum schooner Jasmine ) very informative site on boats and there design . This beauty has a modern shaped hull with an old world charm perhaps for some one not wanting to give up a fast looking hull. Several pictures but not enough info on the hull I think. It looks like a floating apartment with so many windows, guess that's the point . I see it in green and red stain perhaps washed and well worn. sienna brown sails and maybe a little yellow somewhere. Been wondering about the internet all evening and bumped into this site. Its shows very detailed planes for a cat. Whats interesting is the sail design. Looks to have a rigid leading edge just like an air foil for a flying vessel, could probably build the battens like a snow shoe frame around the mast with a sheet attached at leading edge and get a little of the same effect.
Id like to see this one put together ! catamaran rig, to carry up to 149 passengers. http://bigcatcatamarans.com/ Last edited by THE HORSEMAN; Nov 08, 2009 at 01:22 AM. |
