Here is my entry for the garage door opener contest. Made from scarps around the house. I am entering it in "sport" division and I guess it would be in the "retract" category as well. LOL

Less rules more design. But copying something that is already done i.e. scale gets more points i.e. see JB's airliner. Best looking, best design wins. JB's airliner is a master piece of design and looks great.

With a scale model you are locked into a shape already and then you have to design a rc model into the space of the existing airplane. That to me is more difficult that fitting a shape around your equipment.

In my opinion, it needs to be decided if there will be any sponsors. If so, let them decide a class on which they would like to sponsor. If company A predominantly sell smaller stuff, then they might want to sponsor a < 70mm class. A guy that sells nothing but foamies, sponsor a class only for vehicles made of foam. You get the idea...

If there is to be no sponsors, then I would say at most 2 classes, 0-90mm and 91mm+.

Preferrably I would rather see one class, best EDF. If there is nothing to gain but bragging rights, so what if it takes 100 bucks to make 55mm setup and 1000+ to make a 100mm setup. It would all be up to the builder and what he wants to spend since there is no reward other than "I have the best scratch built EDF in the entire United States!!!" There are guys on here that can make a 70mm scale plane built from foam look amazing, with full gear, ducting and even a little cockpit kit. And of course there are guys on here that can build a 90mm sport edf with flawless finishes, gear doors, and the build quality that would equal the best hotrods built by Foose....I think most would agree that anything could be the best depending on how much effort is put into it.

At the risk of sounding like the guy in "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" trying to define what "quality" is, just what would define best?

Also, having designed both sport and scale models; accurate scale models are hands down WAY more effort.

Of course this whole discussion is moot because as far as I'm concerned Getmore has already won. The look on his dog's face is priceless ("Oh, the indignities I must suffer!"). Actually, the prize should go to the dog for putting up with that.

Best would be determined by the guy that is organizing the contest. Whatever floats his boat would win. Objective?? heck no, but anything that requires judgement is subjective.
Again, no sponsors and no prizes, what does it matter other than bragging rights? I am not trying to be difficult or argue, just breaking it down logically. If you design an all out scale plane, and I design a 55mm sport plane, and I win, what does it matter? Its for fun. I would know that you put way more work into yours than I did mine, but the subjective human picked mine.
We have all seen it at fly-ins. Best of show ended up being a big W T F?? the crowd picked the flashy ARF, while the guys that put thousands of hours in the scratch built plane got nothing.
If this is for fun, let it be fun and design whatever your heart desires. If there is going to be something tangible to gain, then let those that are risking the monetary investments choose what they want to sponsor.
For the record, if things work out, I will be designing a scale plane, not from foam. Would I care if a sport plane made of foam beat me? no. Sure I might have an internal WHAT!?!??! but then I will go fly what I wanted to build and call it a day.

How about 4 simple calsses

under 80mm EDF original design
over 80mm EDF original design

under 80mm EDF scale design
over 80mm EDF scale design

Voting should be open to all the RCgroup members. With one vote per person.

I'm leaning towards 2 classes.

1- Hand/Bungee Launch
2- Gear/Retracts

Just thought i'd throw that out to you guys in advance.

Fan Size may not matter this time around.

I was planning no bunghee, no handlaunch and no retracts on my project... just a belly flopper for 90mm+ too start with.

Yeah a hand/bungee launch category and a landing gear category would be really good.

I don't even had a garage door opener to enter...Yup that's the picture Gene! Probably the most classic RCgroups photo ever!!!!

Simple classes seem to encourage more turnout.

I've also noticed that multi-motor models tend to steamroll singles in contests.

So how about two categories:

1 - Single fan model, any size fan, any construction material

2 - Multi fan model, any size fans, any construction material

And some nice prizes would be welcome - I got an RBC Panther last time!

Oh ya, X-4!!! We've been eyeballing the X-4 as a future project for quite some time now. It would be a lot of fun I'm sure!
