Thermal Studios - Reiher 1/7.5

Spring of 2008 officially kicked off my sailplane addiction. Unfortunately, the Summer/Fall of 2008 was dedicated to a remodel project of the house so any flying I did was limited to my existing Multiplex Foam gliders.

One evening I was reading through RCgroups threads and discovered references to a Japanese based model shop. After many weeks of emails I acquired two beauties. This ARF Reiher is one of them.

I'm still deciding on power plant (oh yes, I'll add an outrunner and plenty of electron juice), servos.

The color is the deepest beige I've ever seen. I'll be searching for stickers/decals.

I'll post pics of my progress as I go.

Thoughts, ideas, comments are welcome.

Mighty pretty! Sure you want to mess that up with a motor?

After a short break.....

....back to the assembly.

I'm installing the electronics and surfaces and such.

The glass/epoxy fuse seems flimsy in places and I'm deciding how best to beef it up. At a minimum the front section needs to be reinforced.

My thought is to shape fuse formers and epoxy in place.

The folks over in the http://www.rcgroups.com/scale-sailplanes-122/ group can add their .02 cents for questions or solutions they have found to build questions. There seem to be a lot of arf planes in addition to the wood planes very similar to yours that they are preparing to fly or set up.

have fun, john s.

Once he is 500 feet up you will hardly notice the folded prop.

PFS,

How about some details about the procurment of you beautiful project. Emails, cost shipping, shipping time, etc. I was looking a this kit awhile back and was going to order one. Life got in the way of it. Now thanks to you, it goes back on the list. Then the other. Where in the Puget Sound Area are you?

If you follow the information from Thermal Kobo on the website. It shows the folding prop option. No spinner. Just the yoke and blades attached to the motor shaft. Waiting to see you fly this one.

prodjx,

Sorry man! I too enjoy the pure glider form. But sometimes you got to do, what you got do, to make it fly. E-motors as sometimes the option to the rules.

The order process was not for those who require instant gratification.

While the contact at TS was very congenial it required some prodding to get the items shipped. I'm not sure the issue on their end. Ultimately, I ordered 2 aircraft and both were received in fine condition. Shipping via EMS.

Email me and I'll send you the email chain and contact info.

I'm located downtown....the center of sink in the PNW.

You want to make sure your wing/spar system. I saw a Dodgeson design go 26oz. over cause the guy just had to put a motor in it. I have what's left of it, it went into the sun and was in a dive and he yanked back on the stick and the wing tips kissed each other good by. What a waste of a beautiful glider.

Funny you should mention the spar. I was looking at it last night thinking on beefing up the wing connector where they attach to the root. The mfg supplied a couple of screw in hooks/spring which seems a bit flimsy.

The spar is CF and goes into each wing about 4". I'm considering extending it...will look into it tonight.
