T-28 Trojan 4
T34 Mentor ePTS 4 - 4.5 as to the post about the out lier (T34 = 9 ) that should be removed. nothing 3 planeish about it.As designed and configured in full ePTS setup the T34 is very predictable and nearly impossible to stall . Just got mine not even 2 weeks ago, have spent maybe 2 hours just doing practice taxi'ing and lifted it off twice ( by accident? ) solo , both times the reaction was very predictable, i was able to set it right back onto the runway both times ( approx 10' lift off's ) Today was the full maiden flight on a buddy box. Instructor took it at the end as we failed to start the timer and ran the battery all the way down. as designed the plane warned us giving more than enough time (for the instructor) to line up and sit down safely. Very sedate and docile for me as a first flight / first plane an easy 4.5 no idea where the other rater gets a 9 for this plane. Also while i have seen a few glider mentioned not sure if they belong in this listing. Gentle Lady 3 Spirit 3 Last edited by fla_larry; Oct 27, 2009 at 08:07 AM. |

Planes that were overlooked
I read thru all the posts and was a bit disapointed at some of the comments. One of the very best planes to fly and learn on is the RCM "Q Tee". This is an 049 powered parasol model that deserves a rating of 2. When the plane is trimed out for level flight, it will fly be itself. And yes!, it's a rudder and elevator only. It's one of those "useless stupid 2 channell jobs", Well it makes a perfect trainer for the raw beginner and can take quite a hiding. It's one of the best small models I have ever flown. Definitely worth having in the home squadron.
The second style of planes that should definitely be on the list are the Scimitar Flying Wings designed by Bill Evans. I haven't flown all his designs but the one that does take my preference is the Zippity Do Da. This is a shoulder wing with some dihedral and a trike UC. It is ultra stable, slow and ohh-soo-smoothe in the air. It has a big wing, (WS 64", WC 14") huge fin/rudder and is very easy to see in the sky. Any beginner can fly this at 1/4 to 1/3 throttle and be very confident about it. It flys with elevons that also make it a perfect elevon trainer. It very easy to land and won't drop a wing as very slow speeds, eg, walking speed. I rate this plane as a 3. Joe |

I know this is going to be controversial but I think the Multiplex Acromaster and Precision Aerobatics Extra 260 are both 3's because that is the way I flew them solo.
The 3D Hobby Shop 57" Extra 330 SC is just as easy to fly as those 2 planes (if not easier) but I think it is a 6 just because of the higher expense to replace it if you screw up. |

The Q-tee was indeed a gasser. It was powered by an .049 Cox engine. It can be powered with and electric motor without any problems. I flew mine with standard servos but it's best to use mini servos for better performance. Definitely one for electric conversion.
The ZDD can also be changed to electric power. It would be a great plane to fly as an electric. Check out my building post for the ZDD in "The Builders Workshop" in this forum. I am presenting a fully detailed posting on building and flying the ZDD. Also check out page 4 of this post. http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...=502443&page=4 scroll down the entire page for some fabulous aircraft and read the comments about the ZDD Joe |

It is just as easy to fly as the Acromaster and PA 260. So, the 3DHS 57" Extra 330 SC is a 3 in my opinion. Super easy to fly and land. It has a higher wing loading than the other 2 but that seems to make it more predictable as to where it is going to touch down in spite of any wind gusts or things like that. |

Adding a rating of my own.
E-Flite Blade mCX: 1. My 5 year old son is flying this very well now. I buddy box him, but I really think I'm being paranoid. More to the point my wife, who could not fly the AA Bipe, can fly this pretty well. |

I will toss in my opinion on a few more planes that I own.
Hobbyzone Super Cub is a = 2 - I essentially agree with the consensus opinion on that one. Great Planes U-Can-Do 3D FlightFlex = 8 - This is a very stressful airplane to fly. The flexible frame means you have to remain on top of the plane the whole time watching for over shoot / under shoot etc on where you were trying to place the airplane. It easily gets a twist in the fuselage changing the flight characteristics from flight to flight. Plus it seems impossible to bring this one down without breaking something. The large plastic gear in the gear box can strip just slamming on the throttle too hard. The super fragile plastic motor mount also breaks easily. When landing this one the goal is to put the tail down first. Art Tech (Hobby Lobby) P51D Mustang = 8 This airplane has a lot of power and control in the air. The most dangerous portions of the flight are the takeoff and landings. Typical war bird issues with being very nose heavy. I also needed lots of rudder on both of the 2 planes that I owned while taking off. So backing off of the rudder and elevator carefully while taking off so as not to nose in as you gain airspeed is important. Those Wings can tip stall pretty easily as well. So too tight of turns at too low of an air speed can make it spiral down. Hobbico FlyZone Piper J-3 Cub = 9 - This is one stressful airplane to fly. It has so little power and maneuverability that I am terrified when I put it in the air. You need a huge space because it has a REALLY hard time gaining altitude. The ailerons give you the illusion that they will have any affect on the flight path of the airplane when the don't have much if any affect. You need to supplement with OVER use of the rudder. Thanks for putting this list together! I really wish it would have been out there when I first started wrecking airplanes!

How about the new(ish) Parkzone micro P-51? Sounds tougher than the cessna & easier than the Sukhoi-- sorry if I missed it...

Ok, so i bought a eflite xt 25e for my first plane. Have been flying 450 copters for 3 years. Never did any hard core 3d but can fly it real good. Now ive looked on the net for this but cant find any real answer. Being that i started with copters-(2 copterx's and a blade 400) am i looking for trouble? Ive been on sim flyin plane for a long time now and thats what gave me the bug. I did take it out and taxi and had it take off on me cuz wind was gusting to about 10mph. Spun it around and landed it no problem.
