I'm using a 350 mah NiMH 1/3 AA pack which weighs around 34 grams. I have a Futaba 617 2.4 ghz receiver. 2 Dymond 4.7's and two 6 gram servos. My boom length is 28" from end to end. The rudder is cut into the boom 1 5/8". AUW is around 9.6 oz, but this is prior to fixing the cg. I may try it at a slightly forward position then move it back. If you use the lighter batteries and no regulator (bad idea?) you will be closer.

I have a 2 cell Lipo and Berg 4ch with 4 D47 servos. I had a NiMH with Hitec Electron 6 before and had to put weight in the tail. The plane is MUCH better in the lighter configuration. The tail weight was bad for the launch, causing hooking to the left. I am now able to compete on an even footing with the famous low wing where before it was just a plane to fly at the park and knock around with.

Why is no regulator a bad idea John? I did call Hitec and they said an Electon6 will handle 8.4v. D4.7 are rated at 9.6. I did put this set up in my Taboo Gt and it worked well though I only ran it for a few hrs of operation. I respect your advice and your experience so where am I missing it?

Sorry, I know this thread is about "HJZ Predator Challenge, NorCal, 11/15/09"
but feel I should comment on higher voltages for the servos. Using a higher voltage on the servos will make them move faster and have more power, but at a cost. They will draw more current, run hotter and have a shorter motor life. I can't say I have tested this , but it should be correct electrically speaking. Does this hurt us in DGL, I don't know and have no idea of the difference in motor life span. I'm pretty certain we don't need the extra speed, probably more power (torque ) would be good, and with the larger Lipo batteries, then the higher current draw would not matter. I just thought you guys should at least know the pros and cons. Probably non of what I have said will matter one bit
Running one Lipo on a 40" DLG with 4 D47s the servo current used dropped down to about half or less of the current used in my 60" DLGs with 4 D47s. I can't tell any difference in control response between the 40" and 60" gliders.

I'm just speaking out of manufacturer recommendations. I'm sure the receiver and servos can handle 7.4 volts. I think the life is going to be shortened on the servos, but if it works for you, go for it. ASK, for example, sells a 7.4v 2 cell lipo pack but he also sells a regulator that drops the voltage down. I just think of it as "redlining" a small servo and I don't want to replace it if I can avoid it.

That is no problem, my Blaster-2 for one year. It has D60's wing, D47 in fuse. With 2 cell lipo no reg. I still have this DLG and works just fine. I usually crash in midair or blow up on launch before bad servo.

This is getting big!

We are up to 28 pilots on the list now. It looks like we may have around 18 contestants in Predator 2 class alone.

There is no doubt that CJ’s generosity with the Predator 2 raffle and booms is helping bring people out. Many of these people are from our Predator 2 group buy so again, credit to CJ for providing an economical model that can win contests. The Predator 2 coming on the market has provided a real surge in our Bay Area DLG activity. Thanks CJ!

I am so pleased with the projected turn out. Thanks for signing up everyone!! It really will be great to see everyone again and meet the couple new guys coming out.

With anything over about 20 people we will need to split into 3 flight groups. It looks like that is what we will do. This is a good thing because that means you can get in some breaks during the day to visit, rest, and look around rather than constantly being on the go with flying or timing duties. With 3 flight groups, we’ll fly four rounds rather than our typical five and we’ll still get off the field at about the same time as usual. I expect we’ll be packing up and leaving the field for Pizza Depot at around 1:30.

The tasks for the day will be:

- Round 1: Best 5 flights, 2 minute max.

- Round 2: 1, 2, 3, and 4 minute max flights, any order

- Round 3: Best 3 flights, 3 minute max

- Round 4: Best 4 flights, 2.5 minute max


All rounds will have a 10 minute working time window.
We will explain in more detail at the pilots meeting.

Just got a 300 mah 2 cell Lipo pack that weighs 16 grams. I cut out nearly 18 grams of battery weight and I also got to get rid of the tail weight. The plane really floats now. I'm at 256 g AUW and I'm pretty sure I'm throwing around 165'. I'm going to put a RAM3 in tomorrow and get some charts.
