paperang moth

Hello

I know this maybe aint the thread for this category, but what gives

Here's the thing... A while ago I made a Paperang (saw it on the internet) and I had a blast with it. After a while, digging in the net, I found out about the Moth. I also saw the Youtube video and some pics. It got me, so I tryed to make one myself. I tryed and tryed and tryed and I finally came up with a design that has similar performances. It glides pretty good and stuff, so I was wondering if I made it just like Eds...?

I have a picture of it, but i dont want to upload without asking will I be violating his author rights?

All i want to know is

Is my design the same with Eds Paperang Moth?

pics will come next (after i find out about the author rights)

i doubt the interent police are going to knock on your door. You should be fine, just post your sources and don't claim it as your own and attempt to make money.

It's free publicity for the designer.

Hi.
It's Ed here- I'm the designer of the Paperang and Paperang Moth. Your discussions here are welcome, and yes, they are free publicity. My main interest, as correctly pointed out, is that I am identified as the inventor of the design. I'm an RC modeler of 40 years, and I'd hope that I would be able to reverse engineer the Moth from the photos and video too! It's published as it is for the following reasons- I wrote the book because it's such a delightful little design it just deserved it, and Lulu.com allows you to publish without startup costs. The secret, if there is one, is in the precise shape, which is a combination of the outline you have to cut out before you start to make it, and careful bending of the paper after you've made it.

I then realised that since the cover art is in colour and the outlines in the book are in black and white, some readers might be disappointed (even though the description does set it out clearly). So I decided to allow the outline 'into the wild' so to speak and made the pdf available for download.

Readers of this forum should be able to make the Paperang Moth pretty well, if they have just the pdf and the photos. However, the book is really quite a nice object, and I'm proud of it- in this age of the internet it's nice to have something you can hold in your hand. The instructions are in great detail.

Of course I could have just published everything for free, but for me it's part of the hobby- if it's good enough, and if I've put enough effort into actually describing it carefully, I think it's fair to attempt to monetize it. But I'm certainly not going to complain if people try to make it from what I've posted on the net. The video on youtube was cut specifically to tease the likes of you- because I know I'd really enjoy the challenge if I saw the video!

Copyright issues are complicated with paper artwork. The best description of the law is at Robert Lang's site - if you've never seen it, I heartily recommend you explore his site after reading his copyright statement.

If anyone would like to discuss this, you're welcome to e-mail me- make up my address as Ed at paperang dot com in the usual way.

Regards
Ed Hui

hello

I am delighted that you wrote Ed. The only reason that I needed to know is if I made the moth out of the pics that you posted. It has never been mine, nor will be my design.

I am just eager to find out if I sucessfully finished the challenge that you gave with the reply on the paperang thread

I've just had a search around the site, found stuff I'd forgotten I'd posted! But I can't find your photo. Post it here and I'll let you know.

I'm sure it'll work, because you have the basics of strength with sweep back and correct c of g. The outline needs a bit of work, and the important thing about the Moth is that it's really a three dimensional sculpture. The paper structure allow you to shape it to how it flies best...

There you go. Compare with the video and if it flies as well as mine, then congratulations.

Anyway, I hope you all like the idea, as a principle... make the structure simple, then make it simpler...
