I had some time this early am, so I pre-shrunk the Esaki white and the green tissue and began covering. I was able to finish the fuselage and hope to resume tomorrow. I applied the tissue with 50/50 water/Elmers and sprayed with alcohol to tighten the paper. Since the fuselage has major curves, I covered in sections to prevent wrinkles. I will apply 2 coats of clear dope.

Hi Scigs
Your usual high standard. Is this an OOB build or subbed wood? Really good stuff. |

It is an OOP kit so I subbed the wood. Even when I was younger and built these kits, I did not like the print wood. I don't like the ink showing thought the covering. So I would xerox the parts sheet and sand the ink off the sheet. Then I would glue the xerox copy onto the wood and cut out my parts. This also helped prevent the parts from breaking during the cutting out process.

Everything is covered and doped. I printed out the decals tonight and next week put this thing together.

I was off today so I was able to finish the P-40. Final weight is 18 grams. The wheels you see in the picture are the original Comet wheels, I will be using Peck Polymers wheels for flight. Not much time spent on details just want to get this done. I made my own decals. Comet kits are great planes.

Well took off this am to fly my P-40, flew right off the building board, no trimming what so ever, no weight or down thrust. Used 3/16 rubber and off she went. I can easily see this plane flying away if not careful.

Excellent job scigs! I need to take detailing lessons from you. As well as learning how to apply the wing fairings and making a propeller assembly like that. You would get all the extra points for looks if you ever compete.

Scigs, please explain the "trim tab" on the left wing. It looks like it's fixed at 90 degrees; for turn adjustments? Your Dauntless had the same think, I think.

The trim tab from what I understand was used initially for indoor flying to control the turns so the plane would not fly into the walls. Now there are many theories and beliefs as to which way a plane should fly outdoors, right or left circles. I am no expert but I tend to just keep doing what works best for me. I have never had any issues with flying to the left so I will continue to do so. Trust me, I am not smart enough to invent the little turn tab. This came from the old guys at Scale Staffel back in the day, Walt Mooney, Bill Hannan and others. I like the plane turning in left circles as it climbs into the sky, probably because that is what I was taught. I am sorry, but I wish I had a better answer.

I don't CARE about theories, beliefs, aerodynamics, etc. I just want my planes to fly. You learned from the masters, that's for sure. I'll try it on mine; I would guess the size governs the tightness of the circle. And the turning effect depends on speed, I would think.

Man I wish mine would come out as nice looking as yours! My Nesmith Couger flies well but it looks like a wrinkled mess next to your results!
