Go...I can relate. We are off to Gatlinburg after church this morning. Thinking about taking my Easy Star for some relaxing flights in Cades Cove.

blow them into my neighbors yard |

We are going with a couple from church that owns a condo. They were there last weekend for an owners association meeting and said the leaves in the upper elevations were already gone. We will just be happy to get away for a week.
![]() Gatlinburg also kicks off their winter season this Wednesday with a chili cook-off, similar to the Ribfest event we go to in the spring. That thought makes me sad though...I will be at Ribfest in April instead of SEFF.

Learning to 3D, starting with the Harrier, actually the elevator!
I've been bumbling and stumbling along, trying to learn some 3D.
Stumbled on to an article on Harriering in the September 2009 AMA Insider: http://www.modelaircraft.org/insider...der_sept09.pdf page 6. The article is called Getting the Harrier Down: a building-block approach. It's part 2/5 parts. I've been trying to harrier from a reasonable altitude and speed, going level or even up. This article suggests starting with the elevator, a descending harrier, to learn on. Curious what you proficient 3D guys would suggest has worked for you in your learning process. Thanks, Craig, for your suggestions to practice harriering first, and only to try hovering later on. I, perhaps like many, had approached it the other way around. i've found a computer sim is a valuable tool to learn new manuevers. you dont need to be 3 mistakes high. the sims have the fastest ca cure times & rebuild in the universe. when you crash just hit the space bar and there's a brand new plane ready to go !!

You also need a plane capable of all the things you learned on the sim.

Jim - more flying, less reading..
![]() For me - learning to do a proper harrier just meant playing with a plane at sufficent altitude and feeding in full up elevator and learning how to fly like that.. Obviously full up is not needed but that's sorta how I started... Yank the stick back and make the plane fly... You also need a proper airframe.. Get you one of those EPP Leadfeather Yaks.. |

My main piece of advice... Yank the elevator up, then control the pitch with the throttle. It will also help you with using that left hand some more.

Honey, I got more planes!

I will give you the same advice I gave you a couple years ago when you were having trouble flying inverted.....computer simulator. More time on it is best.

Good News, guys!
I found all 5 parts of this article at the MARKS site: http://www.marksrc.com/ in their several recent newsletters, starting in the March 2009 N/L. Much there to read and to digest. It will take me a while to read them. Not to mention dusting off my FSOne simulator, figuring out how to slow down time, etc. Thanks so very much for all your suggestions and encouragement. Jim Update: I read thru the articles and updated my first post to point out what actually struck me odd, starting out with an elevator to learn to harrier, way before ever working on hovering. Yep.. A sim is going to be one of the best tools.. Next to a sim, a plane you can crash and crash and crash and crash is going to be the next best tool..
Go get something you can crash over and over and over.. Flying a plane you are not scared to crash will do loads for your flying and your confidence.. |

Yup, what Jeff said. It's nice to have a plane that you don't mind getting aggressive with.
