2019 Polecat ALES

Announcing the 2019 Polecat ALES Contest sponsored by the Lancaster Area Soaring Society.

This will be a return to the traditional ALES-only format. Landings will be judged using 5 meter tapes, 5 points per half meter. Altitude limit to be determined each morning depending on conditions.

The event will be held June 14, 15 and 16, 2019 at the LASS field in Manheim, PA. Our field is a sports turf farm with acres of manicured grass. Those who attended in years past know the field and we hope you can make the trip again this year! At this point, we should be setting up on the north side of the field. This is the field to the right as you enter the property.

Friday will be a practice/fun fly/socialize day. Catch up with your friends! Conditions permitting, we would like to hold a 50/50 AULD contest in the evening to benefit the US F5J team. We'll probably have a 100 meter cut-off and 30 minute max.

Awards will be to 3rd place each day and to 10th place overall. This is an Eastern Soaring League contest so there will be 1st through 3rd Expert and 1st through 3rd Sportsman plaque inserts awarded on Saturday and Sunday.

60 pilot limit

Pilot Roster:

Contest Directors will be Dave Reisinger and Fred Maier.

Cost is $80.00. This includes registration, a catered dinner on Saturday and lunches on Saturday and Sunday.

There will be coffee and donuts on Saturday and Sunday.

The field street address is 534 Graystone Road, Manheim, PA 17545.

Dave, was F5J too much trouble for you last year? Not worth the effort?
Decided to stay with ALES only?
Just curious. And a little sad

Hi Oleg,

Truthfully, it was somewhat a of a grind to have a practice day on Wednesday and then 4 days of competition. We discussed a repeat but decided against it. The field is a working turf farm and we always have to accommodate the landowner's needs.

As you know all too well, a 4 day window of good contest weather is always a crap shoot. Plus Thursday and Fridays are hard for many to schedule off and not interfere with family or work commitments.

We looked at a separate weekend for F5J but the ESL schedule is rather tight and we did not want to conflict with other clubs.

It would be nice if you could make it but I know you're probably coming up for the DBSF contest in July.

See you in April, looking forward to flying with the DESS club!

Well said, as someone who knows what it takes to run a major (MSL ran the NATS for many years) it is a real strain on the workers and there never seems to be enough of them and the same guys do all the work year after year. Thank you so much for taking on the mantle of the Polecat, not a light weight task and we flyers really appreciate it.

Hi Tom,

Right now, we're planning to have a 50/50 contest to benefit the team.

It also depends on our level of participation. We have to cover our fixed costs. If we get a very good turnout, we will be in a better position to make an additional contribution.

How about a pass the hat during the contest to support the team.
