Here are some jpg's for documentation of the Military "Birddog". It started life as the Cessna 170 and an Cessna employee won a weekend trip for suggesting the nickname "Birddog". The first military contract was to the Army Air Corps; it was designated as the L-19 (L for Liaison). During the Korean War, it proved useful as an FAC (Forward Air Control) aircraft in directing overhead aircraft strikes to enemy concentrations. It was designated as the O-1 (O for observation). It was used in this capacity on through the Vietnam War. Smoke rockets were fired into an enemy concentration by the O-1 hunter/pilot as a marker and the radio call was made to overhead, "Hit my smoke, Baby!"

As an L-19 in Korea, the paint job was Olive Drab; When it was in use in Vietnam as an FAC, the White and Red was used on the O-1 so that overhead could pick it out against the jungle background.
Ike kept his presidential campaign promise to go to Korea; he took his observation tours in an L-19. Marilyn Monroe used the very same plane shortly thereafter as transport to entertain the servicemen in Korea! Last edited by TGC : Mar 30, 2005 at 12:58 PM. Reason: (sp.) |

Hello Omar, That is a nice looking one! I'm always curious about the power system that other guys are using; if you wouldn't mind, please give me the rundown (motor, gb, prop, batts). Also, there's a new post from brian613(I think) - he wants some info on building a full fuse Birddog: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=346389 Thanks in advance for your power system response, Tom |

This one has had a long and varied life. Initially it flew with a Kyosho DM 20 in a VL planetary gear box, has also flown with a GWS IPS A drive and at one time a VL 50 (I think) with a 5 to 1 planetary and 7-5 VL prop.
The Kyosho and GWS drives were best at a 9x7 GWS prop. The plane was made of meat trays and stripped foamcore and weighs about 7.5 oz ready to fly and has used everything from 2 cell Qualcoms to 3 cell 850 lipos as well as various nicad and nimh configurations and has behaved well in my driveway, various cul de sacs, and one appearance at Toledo (Bowling Green indoor night) two years ago. It has a full interior and the radio gear is under the floor of the cabin...I was a little anal at the time about scale appearance. |

t1mux (Tim) and thatovalguy (Howard) have collaborated on a project that gives you full-size plans and extremely high resolution color graphic skins to build 4 different color schemes of the L-19 and O-1 versions of the Bird Dog using FFF Blucore or Depron.
As scaled, the plans will give you a 36 inch / 915 mm. wingspan. Left click each individual example of the 4 profiles and then click the enlargement icon for a high resolution 3696 x 2854 before downloading each plan. Just click here for the link. Cheers! Tom ![]() |
