One of the tricks I use on long label stock is to make it into a "crack and peel". Pull the trim back a bit and trim the backing. Repeat every cuple inches. Then, when you go to apply it to the model, hold it in place with a couple pieces of LOW tack tape. Remove the front piece of backing, stick it down, remove the next piece of backing, and repeat, until you get the whole thing done.
