There is one catch though: the battery pack is always soldered, or at least welded. Self-made unit with the battery holder uses springs - can sometimes cause bad contact.

With normal no-fancy radio bad contact causes just to lose Tx power for a moment, for computer controlled radios it can be more dramatic, where you have to press some buttons after power-up (to confirm the PLL-frequency, or model or what-ever) before it powers up. Not talking abount a voltage loss in spring contact. Although it seems like a cheap alternative, it really is not very reliable alternative unfortunately.
