External USB Power and Premature Battery Failure Alert!

I've been advised by the developer to alert those using external USB power supply to check the specs of their power supply/USB charger. Recent user premature battery failure experience and testing by the developer have suggested that the external power supply may be part of the problem.

If the power supply cannot maintain the voltage under load sufficiently high, the camera's internal charging circuit may not be fully capable of keeping the internal battery charged to full capacity as the camera operates. The battery can then go through many small charge/discharge cycles during recording, which ages the battery and can lead to premature failure.

To avoid this situation, it is recommended that your external USB power has at least a 1000 mA rating and an output voltage between 5.0 and 5.5V! Also, a short, high quality charging cable should be used to keep the voltage drop from the charger to the camera to a minimum.

Those using the camera as a car recorder are at the highest risk due to the long extended recording periods (not to mention possible excessive temperatures which also take a toll on lipo battery life). The dedicated car charger and cable for the Mobius meet these specs, but other third-party car chargers may not.

Those using other external USB power sources (especially from RC equipment) should also take note of this. Powering the Mobius from the BEC circuit on a motor ESC may not meet this minimum power specification, especially when powering other equipment such as servos, and worse, it can also overload the BEC circuit and cause RX brownout or total BEC shutdown resulting in a crash. For RC AV uses, a dedicated external BEC to power the Mobius from the flight battery is recommended.
