Maybe it hasn't occurred to you that the USPS doesn't load up a package from "Joe" and take it directly to "Bill". What they do ,is load up a couple of hundred items in the truck, and drop it off at 'sorting stations'.
Now the item you want may be in another state ,but it's only one item..It doesn't make sense to the computer to send a truck 600 miles for that one item.
The most cost effective way is to load it on a truck with multiple items coming to you local sorting station.
That may be to send it with those hundreds of other items, to meet a truck intended for your area.

Looking on a map for a direct route makes sense to us, but not the 'penny watchers'.
Once in a while I pretend I;m driving to the destination of the package..It takes a very short time to convince me that it's cost effective to wait for them to finish the job.
One of my packages went to the West Coast to end up in Mississippi,'way faster than I could have driven there from Maryland...And cheaper too.
