I was there attending freshman orientation when Whitman started his murder spree. He was over 200 ft high in the U.T. tower lying prone on the floor of the observation deck and firing through the drain spouts. Being a trained ex marine, he was familiar with using cover and firing and moving from point to point. His primary weapon was a bolt action 3006 rifle. He would not have killed as many people if he hadn't chosen his sniper position so well. I saw him shoot several people people with slow, deliberate fire. His cover did more to aid him than anything else. He never gave the police a clear shot, they had to storm the tower and take him where he had holed up. His position and the time required to get to him caused the high casualty rate. Should we ban guns in the hands of military trained citizens because of him? An untrained citizen probably wouldn't have chosen such a good position.
