If you use a slipper clutch there is no issue for the gears apart from wearing them out. This is by far the best solution, especially when things are glued together.
I emailed that dude and he never emailed me back. The slipper clutch is definitely my next step. (Although I haven't completely wrapped my head around the concept of how it works, I'm sure it will make more sense when I assemble it and see it for myself)
