Pulling the main gear isn't going to work. It's too soft and you'll just end up bending it.

Get a flat head precision screwdriver, stick it in the gap between the main gear and body (rigght up to the center shaft if possible). And then twist, that'll pry the main gear off the main shaft. Doesn't really take much to remove.
