Your average draw per motor will me more like 4A. So your 18AWG battery wire will be absolutely fine (as long as it's soldered well).

OP - your method is spot on, but like TC says you need a bigger soldering iron. To do really big 4 > 1 bundles, you need a 50W iron with a big tip.
I'm actually using a 60watt iron and a chisel tip, but it's a cheaper RadioShack adjustable one so its probably not really 60watts, lol. I really need to just put money down on a good Weller...
