Yes, it has this kind of protection. It's called MOPS. And I recommend killing it on this particular PCB only if you stay with the standard battery.
Double Horse 9117 MOPS Bypass (5 min 42 sec)

It's worth a try - you could unsolder the bridge quite easy if it doesn't help.
