Well a bunch of folks, rightly so, gave me grief over that design. They suggested I install the wing-rods between the spar-caps instead. Nevertheless that part of my wing held together for several flights with no problems (it was a completely different area of the wing that ended up failing). I was concerned about weakness also, if you skip ahead to post #11 you'll see I did some reinforcing around the wing-rods. Also note that those ribs that supported the rods were plywood, not balsa.

I can't say I'd recommend that approach but if installing between the spar-caps isn't an option, that might be one way to go about it.
