Potentiometer. Basically a variable adjustable resistor. They are used to signal the gyro, for instance, as to what sensitivity to adjust to. Varistor is a similar term. The volume on a non digital radio uses the same thing directly to vary the volume. Inside is a circular surface that has a uniform variation in resistance. A probe is rotated to different positions on this surface to gain the desired resistance.
