The turbine sound also depends on the motor, IME the higher the cog the more you'll get that turbine whistle. There's a youtube vid of an A10 using haoye rotors and scorpion motor and you'd swear it was a turbine or he was creating that sound some how with a speaker. But it wasn't, it's the Scorpion motors at low RPM creating that turbine whistle.
You are right about the sound. There is one more thing that contribute huge amount to how fan sounds - dynamic balance of the EDF unit. You can actually choose the sound to some extent by strategically dis-balancing the unit. That is something I am going to experiment with when I get my motors and fans. I am more leaning toward cheap sickle fans from BP Hobbies vs. 2x expensive Skyworld's.
