There are a few methods for painting foam. I like using water based Polyeurethene (flooring) clear coat as a base, especially on EPO as it sticks nicely. I lightly sand and prep the foam, and then coat, sand , coat, sand, coat..... until I have a nice smooth surface. This can then be finished off with any paint and the foam is protected.

Second method is to use water based acrylic paints as the don't melt/attack the foam.

All this does add weight, so go sparingly on the coats of paint. And always try a small test patch to see how it goes first.
