Personal experience.

I had a cheap 6s 4000mAH self destruct overnight.
Not connected to any device.
Not being charged or discharged.
6 hours after it's last use.
Resting voltage was around 3.8v per cell.

Woke in the morning to the acrid smell of electrics. Like waking with a bullet hole next to my pillow!

Keep them out of your home, in a metal box that can let off pressure (ie. if you use an "ammo box" make a couple of holes to allow gas to escape should a pack let go.

I have about 40 different Lipos and I store them in 4 "small arms ammo. boxes" I know that if a pack lets go I will lose numerous packs but the chances of a pack self destructing are extremely low and I'll just have to live with losing 10 instead of 1 pack.

Don't kid yourself, charged or discharged, these things can (very rarely) get nasty.

Happy flying!
