Bruce is right, the ambience was, as always, great.

But the great killer for me was the drive from the hotel to the flying field. I noted this problem right at the beginning but even then underestimated it. The first 5km were into Kiev past a motorway junction, round a cloverleaf and back to opposite the "hotel". This took half an hour or more in the Monday morning rush hour. Then 30km along the main Kiev-Warsaw road in heavy traffic.

This used up most of the time and energy which usually goes into the social and technical interaction which is, for me, the best part of the world championships. There were things I wanted to see and never did. I had Tony Sabbe's video of Lommel and Arnhem to show. I wanted to demonstrate my Unilog analysis program. The miserable conditions on the field precluded any of that there.

One day we had to do the drive twice (four legs there and back) ! It was just a case of lots of driving, three cold wet flights, then home with a bad cold!
