Canadair Regional Jet - takeoff from 'dolly'

Scratch-built foam, newspaper and Solarfilm Canadair Regional Jet.

Motors: 2 x E-flight Park 370 3600's,
Fans: 2 x GWS EDF64's,
Batteries: Either 2 x 3S HXT2200 or 1 x 4S A123 2300 (now using 3S Rhino 2550mAh).
ESC's: 2 x Turnigy Plush 40A.

Takeoff from a 3 wheeled foam 'dolly' with it's own RX and servo for steering.
(now using full mechanical retracts)

Builder: George Storbeck (sadly George passed away last year)
Design: Graham Dyer, George Storbeck
Pilot: Graham Dyer
Camera: Myles Miller

Wow. That is truly beautiful. I hope you didn't scratch up the belly too bad landing on that gravel. Wouldn't it be better to land on the grass?

Thanks, retracts were considered but we decided against them, the grass is too rough and they would add too much extra weight/complexity. A previous 747 had retracts but they were more hassle than they were worth.
The plane has a plastic skid on the belly hence the noise and slide, no damage occurred.

That is one hellva scratch-built plane. It looked a bit under powered. Great job flying it.

On the contrary, that was one of the few scale models I've ever seen that wasn't overpowered. The climb angle was almost exactly scale, as were most all of the speeds and rates. Why would you want to ruin something so beautiful with more power?

What put it over the top for me was the flaps. When I see scale airliners flying around with gear down but flaps up, they just don't look right. Those flaps are clearly functional and really helped give you scale speed and glideslope. Every scale airliner should have flaps. Any time you get a good look at a full-sized jetliner (i.e. when they're below 5,000 feet or so), the flaps are probably down.

I used to fly CRJs. Trust me, underpowered is scale. :D

Bartek, the construction of ours was very unsophisticated :) . We used a hot-wire cut white foam tube, with internal supports only at the wing saddles. Covering is wet unprinted newspaper and watered-down generic white cold wood glue left to dry, then covered with solarfilm. Motors draw 16A each at WOT, thrust unknown but estimated at around 350-400g (12-14oz) each. Batteries, motors etc in the first post. Weight around 1.4kg (49oz) and wingspan 150cm (59in).
