TIE Advanced
8 Attachment(s)

I've always been a huge Star Wars fan. Since I now enjoy RC stuff too, I thought I'd try combining the two :) A few people have made X-wings, A-wings, and even the Millinium Falcon. I've not seen many TIE's though. Standard TIEs and TIE Interceptors pose a problem because they have zero wing area. So, I decided to make Vader's TIE Advanced(seen in the pic above). It's got lots of wing area :)

My wingspan is 15". I'm using foamcore posterboard with the paper removed, and in typical Jeff fashion, it's put together entirly with hot glue. Since it's a pretty basic build, I'll just include brief captions under the pics. I'll be using:
UH 15g 1500Kv outrunner
El Cheapo Towerpro ESC(cause I had it laying around)
BidProduct 4.5g servos
Berg 4L reciever
2S 450Mah

Here are my plans. They're sketched out on a scrap of posterboard when the idea hit me one night. Since I made it from scratch, I was able to make the measurments nice and round for easy measuring and layout(actually, some of them aren't quite round, thats because I build a bigger one, decided it was to big for indoors, and scaled it down by 30%).

I've always heard that the star wars x-fighters and the like are juset a fantasy and they will never fly. That would be pretty dang cool if you got it to fly.

Any ideas of AUW and wingloading?

Looks great. I sure do hope it flys. :D

AUW will be nearly 6oz. Theres almost as much weight in the side panels as the rest of the foam, so it's pretty heavy. That'll probable make it pretty sluggish on the ailerons. No idea on wing loading, but it's probably pretty high. My original idea was to use a ducted fan, but I couldn't find a fan and power system strong enough for my needs within weight limitations.

My bigger outdoor version will probably have rudders built into the side panels, so I'll be able to make use of the escessive amount of area in those panels. It'll probably knife edge better than it flys level :D I didn't want to spare the weight for the extra servo on this one, atleast not until I know it actually flys...

I've seen it tried before, but I don't think anyone succeeded.

Now, what about a twin EDF A-wing?

Thanks for the link, that was a fun read :) I imagine I'll have the same problems he did with the huge side panels. I am conciderably lighter than he was though and with a better prop to wingspan ratio, so maybe mine will actually fly(which would be a surprise to everyone, including myself :D ) I'll see what I can do about getting some video of the maiden :)

A TIE Bomber twin EDF would be fun, I might have to give it a try this summer. I am going to try a swing wing X-wing and profile Star Destroyer too, although I've already got to many projects and not enough time...

Last few weeks I was looking for a good aircraft from a sci-fi movie, but there is really not much there. I was thinking about Jedi Interceptor, it might actually have a chance to fly, with a prop in the meddle. It has got quite a lot of wing area, but it's swept down, so it would probably be very unstable. Anyway it has to wait till I finish my foamie YF-19 (remember Macross Plus?).
