New AerodromeRC 1/9 Sopwith Camel
1 Attachment(s)
Hi Guys,

Finally getting started on the proto build of Aerodrome RC's new 1/9 scale Sopwith Camel. 39" wingspan and 460 sq. in. wing area. Looks like it will be a great plane. Haven't got a lot done yet, but parts fit and design is excellent.
Started on top wing first.

For those that have not tried it, Bob Smith's new Flex Glue works great on these small electric models. Really intended for gluing flex hinges, but works good on balsa joints.

Yes, sure looks nice. Have you decided on a power system and finish yet?

Kurt calls for an AXI 2808. I have a Himax 2812, which seems to be real close to the same that I will use. As for covering, I probably will go with Polyspan and either use dope or water base acrylic for color.

Great start, Sam!

Another 1 1/2 hours of work. Build the ailerons in the morning, and the top wing will be done.

Finally got some more work done on the Camel. All flying surfaces are done and fuse is next. Hopefully by the end of the weekend, I will have a complete model.

This thing has gone together very nice. No problems with parts fit, and assembly is very fast.

Here is the plane I am planning on doing. It's the Camel at Rhinebeck, and I am planning on carring the model with me when I go this fall.

Hey, isn't that the same one as Kurt's avatar?

#11 sleonard Apr 26, 2006 01:59 PM

Looks like it, tho it's hard to tell from the small pic. Looks like the plane in his avatar is sitting on concrete, and I know that there is no concrete at Rhinebeck, where I shot the picture I posted.

Well, the avatar is his *model* of a Camel, not the real thing. :)

Did this ever fly? :)

#14 edi Sep 14, 2006 04:32 PM

Sure did. I know because a) Kurt has told me and b) I think I recall having seen a picture with it in flight.

Sorry, this is Sam Leonard's proto build of the 1:9th camel which he has not finished. The one that I told you about was my own Dare kit from several years ago.

Sam told me that he planned to take the model to Rhinebeck this year, but I have not heard whether he has it ready or not.
