Gym-Blu Simple Indoor Lightweight Stick Plane

I needed a replacement for the PFC I trashed the other day, for our inddor flying and to fly in the street out front on calm evenings and mornings.. So, here you go!

28x8 wing, 5oz using std Pico Gear & IPS w/ 2s ET250 pack.

It's a floater!

Edit, 1-8-2005: Add 1/8" additional incidence on front of wing. Makes it more stable at even slower speeds :) Files are updated.

How does she fly?
is it really slow?
wind abilities?
does it fly in a gym?

Phantastic! I want to build one - looks like the perfect "toss off the back deck" plane. I've been looking for a plane just like this one - something to fly in the backyard & also at night under the really tall parking lights at the local industrial park (they have several empty parking lots, very well lit - this plane looks perfect).

Yup, 4.1oz w/o battery :D
Peel all the skin off the Fan Fold. Go easy on the glue. Heat treat / Temper tha foam for strength.

Slow :) Yea, a 2 mph wind and it'll harrier! Still can stand a little more wind, though, due to fairly low drag. Maybe 5mph would be ok.

A gym will be no problem!

Edit (2-15-2005): Just so it'd be on the first page, and since I can only attatch 5 files per post, I'll post the Dome-Blu Plans, here. It's a blown up version, 440 sqin, per GPW's suggestion for a little more power and weight with the same wing loading. You can find the discussion and development further down in the thread.

Gym-Blu looks great! I especially like the large tail surfaces, looks like you're one of the few who realise the value of plenty of tail area at very slow speeds. Keep UP The Good Work!

OK!!! I got the plans.... now , if I build it light enough , do you think it would fly with the LPS system ???? blue gear ... 7x6 prop ???

Should be enough... I was using a 9x4.7 on an IPS-A, so down a prop size. The 8x4.3 may be better, though, with the same loading on the motor.

Hmmm... I didn't weight the airframe without the gear, but an ounce and half is a lot of weight savings. I just wonder about the wing strength.

Nada, I formed it, bent it and and tempered it. You could actually try to do a nice smooth curved dihedral, but it'd need more tip hight for the same effective angle. The 1.5" is about 6 degrees., so maybe go 1.75-2" tip height.

Basically, you heat treat the surface of the foam. Using a heat gun, you keep it moving across the surface, watching the surface as it just starts to melt, and becomes a little shiny... It seriously strengthens the foam, without making it excessively brittle.

You missed the SNOW (even here!),luckily we had BEER .....
The GYMBLU (sounds like a rap star) will be a nice platform to test thick vs. thin UC airfoils ... at low speeds ... something we need to know more about ....

Oh, we didn't miss the snow, or the cold, just the thaw... -8 degrees and 12-20" of snow... returned to 60 degrees and mud :(

I drew this up with the 4/40 wing chamber, and I like it. The PFC had about 10% underchamber IIRC. Maybe I'll make up a 10% wing to compare. Have to take a WAG at the flat chord, or get a drawing done first. I did make up a few 4/40 templates as part of the project, so maybe I should do some 10/40's as well. Should be able to just scale the X axis...
