Now that I've got myself into dropping payloads with parachutes, I figured it was time for a new blog entry. I'll keep posting my parachute related activity to this blog, so please feel free to subscribe or even say hi. Continue reading the rest of this blog to see videos and more!

First tests with new 40" parachutes. Very slow descent rate. High flyout angle. Much more scale-like inflation.

Very nice! Would like to do the same. Looks like it adds a lot of fun to flying the Twotter. Questions: Where did you obtain the parachutes? Homemade or storebought? And how did you customize the Otter to hold and drop the parachutes? Would really appreciate hearing more about it.

Sorry for the late reply. I made all the parachutes myself.

The release mechanism is as follows:
On the side of the fuselage, near where the main landing gear is, there is a small peg sticking out the side, approx. 1/4". On the other side of the fuselage is the same thing, but it is a pin that extends inside the fuselage and attaches to a servo arm. A rubber band goes from the peg, around the payload, and then to the pin. I retract the pin to release the rubber band. Only requires a micro servo as there is not much force required to retract the pin. Very simple and so far 100% reliable.

The only mishap I've had is when I tried to multi-stage a deployment. I routed the rubber band thru a cut-knife I had made, but the vibrations in flight eventually caused the knife to cut the rubber band before I intended, and I had to walk a long way away to go pick up the payload!

New videos including one showing the concept of stabilization parachutes, one showing a two-parachute cluster, and one failure due to bag lock.

Another great low altitude drop this past Friday. This one has a cluster of 3 parachutes and they hit full inflation approx. 10 feet off the ground.

I just lost my drogue and D-bag high up in a tree. I was experimenting with grocery bags as parachutes for the first time, and it was quite windy. I picked a spot in the sky to drop that was better for video rather than parachute recovery, and that didn't work too well. Lost the drogue and D-bag, and the video camera ran out of memory just as the grocery bags were beginning to deploy. No video. However, the bags worked great and they don't require a lot of packing volume at all. I'm going to experiment further.

After 2+ weeks of rain and high winds and plenty of UV exposure, I got my drogue out of the tree and it still works great.

I did another grocery bag drop and here is the video...

I replaced the drogue with this new 24" parachute I made with painter's drop cloth and duct tape. I have a 36" modified version of this one in the making. Will post video when available.
