Why flyers don't like 2 stroke engine
Why flyers don't like 2 stroke engine? I experience 2 stroke engines working good and much power fly high. I have two 4 stroke engine problem adjust rockler and needle throttle still not success and both engines abandon in basement over 20 years.

Who say's they don't like 2 stroke? I love mine as well as my 4 strokes.

Personal choice?
They call me crazy for going from gas (Zenoah G20) to glow (Saito FA120).

I still like two strokes. Some people do like four strokes better just because they are quieter and are better for scale planes.

It all comes down to personal choice. I for one use both 2 and 4 strokes. I do have one 2 stroke that has given me problems but it hasn't deterred me from using them. I still even use the one that has given me problems after changing out the parts that kept acting up.

Some flyers told me don't like 2 stroke. I agree you said flyers like quite sound (reduce loud). Often flyers told me like 4 stroke. I don't bother me sound of 2 stroke engine.

Choice, nothing more. I use one two stroke and the rest four strokes. Gas is easier though and don't tend to go out of tune when our weather changes. Our weather here goes from the high 100s down into the mid 20s and 30s so it's a big change. I use OS and YS four strokes and I already know my high end needles will be turned out about 4 clicks this winter to fatten them up, my gas engines don't change.
I just really like YS. The way the fuel pumps is great, they don't care at all where or how I install a fuel tank. Our weather doesn't change much from spring to winter so once I tune my engines I don't touch the needles during our main flying season. Even my OS engines keep the same tune.
People that twist the needles makes me crazy just watching them. If the engine is in correct tune today it should stay in tune all season.
I adjust the valves or check them once a year on my four strokes during the winter.
With the YS if the engine starts to run different then it is usually the diaphragm and you just loosen two screws and replace them, about 2 bucks. If you fly them all season then they go bad about every year or two. I keep them on hand in my shop.
I just like everything about a four stroke, the looks and sound, ease of operation. I pick up OS and YS used and just rebuild them, I have only bought two YS engines new and never have bought a new OS four stroke. They cost way too much!!! Both brands!
If I was to buy another new engine it would be gas anyway. The cost of glow fuel is moving me back to gassers, I would sell my glow engines but they loose too much money when used. I know, I never have spent much on them myself.

there is nothing wrong with either type. i use both. generally in their intended/popular application. 2-strokes go in anything that needs absolute max performance or limited weight / size constraints and/or are not expensive enough to warrant a pricey 4-stroke. 4-strokes go in .60 size & larger scale & aerobatic aircraft

in fact, i've only got two aircraft .60 size or larger using a 2-stroke out of two dozen planes ranging from tiny to large.

it is not a matter of 2 stroke loud, vs 4 stroke quiet

it has more to due with the tone of the engine, see If I have a biplane I want it to sound as close to a biplane as i can. it really doesn't matter if it is loud but the tone has to fit. it makes for a much more enjoyable flying experience.

now the converse is true with my q500 I want that to have the correct tone I would never put a 4 stroke in it.

The only thing I don't like about 2 strokes is they use more fuel.

Really ? I remember my Mk-1 did go trough the tank rather quickly but maeby the last version is more economical, I have'nt run mine.

Hello fellow flyers from above. I really appericate your view between 2 stroke and 4 stroke engines. I had struggle adjust on 4 stroke OS engines trouble valve or rocklers even in 1988 expert flyer did struggle it, too. That's why I like 2 stroke engines easy for me handle them. I believe you either good both 2 or 4 stroke engines. I have one OS FS .40 on ACE 4-40 biplane display. Another one OS FS .61 (broken ring) it's too late discontinue manufactory part.
Weather temperature remind me need change needle fuel between lean and rich. I saw engine quit durning 100 degree f hotest the day so I gave little rich more for cool it down. Another day fall weather made engine running good.
Yes depend design model airplane with type engine for weight and power force. Whoever, you are good handle with 4 stroke engines. :D

Here a photo Cub-J3 Carl Goldberg 76" wingspan notice the engine it's OS FS .61. It's old photo so Cub-J3 already changed 2 stroke engine.
