BAe Hawk 90mm EDF

Found this Hawk on sale at the local HS (Hobby People) and could not resist :)

It's the huge foam FlyFly (or Hobby TopGun) BAe Hawk, but the box inside says Graupner !

Maybe cheaper somewhere else, but the temptation of just throwing the box in the back of my car was just too great...

Waiting for the electric retracts and stronger struts. Nevertheless I used some JB weld to strengthen some of the joints.

I added a rudder ...

The full flying stab is cute, but won't last long (how do I know ;)) in a foamie.

I use instead the much more robust (for a foamie) traditional KISS setup.

The new HET 650 motor offers the possibility of using both 36mm (WeMoTec) and 40mm diam (HET 700) EDF fans. So I went that route.

This will be a nice testbed to finally test the (hysoled and balanced) CS 12-bl fan and see if it's any good :)

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1521751

The fan will be mounted so that it can easily be swapped.

The Hawk will also give me a chance to test this new HeliDrive controller (YGE clone) to see if it's any good. What a brick :)

120A HV esc opened at both ends to allow better air cooling ;)

Tamiya Red and Testors Acryl Cobalt Blue are a very good (almost perfect) match for the original colors

What I like about the Hawk is that there's a ton of place for batteries up front ;)

The speed controller (120A HV) is installed above the duct so that it gets plenty of air ... also the battery cables are kept short this way.

And finally, it does not throw the CG off by much as does sit right over it.

I have also made some improvements on the ducting by shaping some styrofoam blocks.

Some finishing and spackling is still left to do, then I will glue the shaped blocks securely in place.

The motor wires will eventually get wrapped up completely in aluminum foil.

Landing gear and struts arrived (from www.hobbywhere.com) ... the new mechanisms are 4mm diam, the new struts are solid but a bit heavy.

Everything works fine, but the extension cords had the wrong polarity plugs crimped on ;)

The new wheels are really heavy, the new struts are quite a bit longer which causes some issues.

I dremeled out part of the wing to get the new struts to fit, but I think I will go bakc to shorter struts due to the nosgear probloem (see below).
