Indoor foam Ultimate for IPS build thread

1 Attachment(s)
I started with Tim H's plans and shrunk them down to a 23 inch wingspan Ultimate for flying indoors (one basketball court sized gym) using GWS IPS systems. It flew so well several of the local guys also built them. There has been some requests for more detail here on THE ZONE so I thought I would document the lastest one I am building. I started by making templates for the cut foam parts.

Wing differences

1 Attachment(s)
While it flew fairly well with the stock wing, it was a little quick for some of the newbies to indoor flying. So, I added one inch to the chord at the leading edge and 1/4 inch to the ailerons. This lowered the wingloading down to Tiger Moth speed and really helped the newbies. I liked it so much that is all I build now. The wing in the photo on the bottom is stock and the one on top is the wider chord.

Foam Parts

Here are the cut foam parts. The fuse and rudder are cut from 6mm depron and the rest is 3mm depron that I got at DepronUSA. The top wing has the cut out for the cabane strut in the center while the lower wing does not.

Fuse stiffner

1 Attachment(s)
This picture shows the carbon fiber I use to stiffen the fuse. I use .014 thick by 6mm piece of flat carbon fiber. I had this in a box of carbon fiber and am not sure where I got it. I think most of composite folks probably carry it. The carbon fiber is just laying on the fuse at this point.

Installing fuse stiffner

1 Attachment(s)
I cut the fuse in half longways to install the CF. It goes from the front along the motor mount stick back to the tail. You could probably use a CF tube like the big Ultimate, but I think this is lighter. I glue it in using foam safe CA, making sure the fuse is straight with no twists or warps.

Fuse together

1 Attachment(s)
Here is a pic of the fuse glued together. I also installed the motor stick. You can add in some right thrust at this time. I line up the back end of the stick with the left side of the fuse and at the front I line the stick up with the right side. This provides plenty of right thrust.

color

1 Attachment(s)
I used to use testors paint in a rattle can for paint pens and sharpies for decoration, but like this method better. Fast-pack.com sells colored packing tape (like Zagi tape) at a really good price, so I've been using it. I think it is actually lighter than the paint I was using. Here is the Ulty with color applied. This will be the last pic for a bit, got to go to work. Will try to add more this evening. Sorry for the quality of the pics. I had to shrink them down to fit on the board. If you want them full size let me know. My email is lcox@stx.rr.com and I will get them out to you.

What does the plane weigh without any gear? Will it hover on an A drive?
Thanks

I just got some of these :) (second table down), now I know what to use 'em on.

Weight

I'm not sure but the flying weight is about 6 ounces. I use an A drive and 3 cell lipoly (etec 250) and can hover early in the pack.
With a twin A drive 4.8 and 2 cell TP 700s it will hover right up to lvc.
