Gee Bee R3 - Electric with a real radial sound system !!!
5 Attachment(s)
Hey Guys,

I know this aircraft seems somewhat rare as I keep seeing build threads for them that go dead prior to the maiden so Im doing it the other way round for a change ! Its flys !!! and well.. Its the 20cc / 60/90 Gas glow 59` version from Dolphinco. I believe Hobby Lobby and donut models also stocked it but its far from you " main steam " plane. More info and video to come if the interest is there.

20cc Dolphinco version 59`
MTOW - 8.3 Lbs
Scorpion S4024-12
16x12 APC
100 Amp CC
6s 5000 30c
JR Digital servos x 4
Full flying wire kit - Sounds FANTASTIC !!!!!

Fantastic Bing!

Is it fast enough and is it nice to fly? What's the vertical performance like?

Good stuff!

#3 OzparkPilot Sep 06, 2011 06:14 PM

Its very fast ! Climbs unlimited vertically with close to 1800 Watts its a rocket ! Thats 212 Watts per pound !

The tail wheel snapped off on the last flight so I am going to have to do some fixing before next sat ! Video to come

thanks ! I agree ! Sex on wings ;-)

Damn good thing for me they're out of stock! The profile on the fuselage tapering into the nose is just pure art. The price seems pretty reasonable, too

I'd be very interested in your assessment of the general kit quality and completeness and how the build went, particularly things like achieving the cg without a 20cc engine and the max prop diameter. I've got a 4025-15 Hyperion that's just a bit heavier and bit lower Kv than your Scorpion that could be a good candidate for around 1200W

Mine had some shipping damage and I had to rebuild the verticle fin. There was also a small rip in the wing and canopy locking template looked like it had been eaten by mice ( i kid you not ).. That said I would order another one in a heart beat.

There is plenty of room to move a 6s 5000 pack back so you should not have an issue. I did have to put a bit of dead weight in the aft fuse but I am going to more the servo back more as I HATE to add weight. That said its not much.

1200 Watts... Hmm... that should be ok. Do the math, mine weights 8.3 Lbs. I getting almost 1800 Watts out of my Scorpion motor.

Neat plane. I have a new airframe hanging up in my model room, ready to build. Over here, they are distributed by Giant Model Products out of Indiana. For Europeans, Donuts models sold distribution rights to Eflite Germany. Either way, this is a high quality Chinese ARF. It is also available in a 30cc size 72" span that is said to have better wing loading than the 59", as well as 50 and 100cc sizes. I started another thread on it a while back under Sport Planes.

Good to hear the maiden was successful. Many have not been.

I like it! Whose system is that and how heavy is it?

My ARF is still hanging from the ceiling - I'll get too it soon. I'm going to go for the lightest weight and use a Power 46 / 4S setup in the hope I can get into the 6-7lb AUW. I have an AXI 4120 ready to go in. I think I'm also going to do split flaps for mine, and I'm going to use struts inside the LG to tame that bounce.

Meanwhile, I get my R3 fix with my foamie Cermark Fantasy Racer, which is soldiering on.

Thanks ! Me to. It's the new mrrcsound delux package. Check out there site for details about weight. Regarding your R3, I could not imaging 4s would be nearly enough. Mine flys well on 6S but I would not want less. I would not worry about split flaps as landing speeds are very manageable in any case and she will tip stall if you get to slow on finals. Keep me updated on yours !!
