See with your ears… (Post Video with Great DS Sounds)

I think there's so much to DSing with sound...

I took some video and made a sound recording yesterday of medium speed Acro DS. There’s so much to learn from listening. Speed, Shear location, extra wing loading due to g forces, lack of wing loading from the release of elevator after a turn, where the shear is when your planes if high and far back, for tight, (egg beater turns on either side of the shear), , when you’re out of the shear, the thickness of the shear way down the back and tightness of the shear near the ridge.

If you don’t like front side skip the first third. I liked the way I could hear Tim flying his plane while I was on deck, cruising the front side. The microphone picked up much more than I coudl hear,, it was located at the rock wall and picked up TIms and Bills conversation about the Vector DS he was flying and how it was setup. I could tell where he was in the groove, about how fast he was going, the size of his circuit, how smooth the air was and that he was doing big laps.

If you like the sounds of DS you may like this video have a listen. If you do check it out it will look a lot better if you go to youtube and choose to watch it in High Definition. Or even better download it here… (right mouse click and choose save target as)

CUT IT UP, RIP IT UP, TEAR IT UP. It is amazing to watch you fly the ATOMIC like that.
We need a nickname for the inverted Egg Beaters, any suggestions out there?

Sweet hand catch at the end there! I keep telling the guys over here (in the UK) that they are too spoiled with all the thick grass and heather you can land in. Of course, on the other hand we sure are spoiled by the fact that you can drive up to most of the sites we fly at back home in the states!!

Ya, I think sound really makes the vid. You using something like the rig I had
out there for this vid? Zoom H2 or H4 with a dead cat?
The Weldon Dynamic Soaring experience (10 min 0 sec)

The recorder picks up a lot more noise of the plane passing through turbulence
in and under the shear than you can ever pick up with naked ears.

Yes Ian, Dead Cat and I think H2. Jimmy ordered it right after you made those killer recordings at Weldon, thanks for paving the way :D That was my first time next time I'll turn the gain up I think that was a mistake to have it on the medium setting??? It really makes the video, I'll be using it a lot I really like to hear the sound.

I had to fuss with the AGC settings a fair bit, but ya I think it pretty much ended
up on the highest gain setting in the menus (either AGC1 or COMP1.. but don't
remember off hand), but with the mic gain switch on the side set to medium. Trick is
to make it hear everything, but not drive it to clip. I then brought the audio
levels up in the video editor to liven it up some more.

Listening to the sound of the plane crossing the shesr layers has always been a major part of DS'ing to me. It really has alot to do with the size of the circit I fly along with the location of the circit.
Nice vid.

Yea Nick

that, well those, (yours and Ians) videos rock, the sounds are awesome and the flying. I hope to get a lot more videos wiht sounds of DS. In Fact I think I'm going to change this thread to make it a place for DS sounds.

I'll add a few others I like, do you have anymore with really good sound?

Thanks Nick...

Some other cool sounds...

This is another one Ian made with the H2 that got me going.

This is the first one my friend did that got me into the sounds of DS.. It's an old video but Great Sounds.
Just a standard video recorder no H2. I think Parker shields the wind so well that it works anyway.
