Novice Brushless Questions

Is there a thread I can read regarding the science of brushless motors that will bring me up to speed on the differences when compared to brushed motors

In particular I am interested in the following:

Why the motors have 3 leads (compared to brushed pos and neg)
Are they DC
Can they be reversed etc

There are probably lots of threads, but let's start a new one anyway!

They are actually 3-phase AC motors - miniature versions of the motors that drive big air conditioning fans and similar equipment.

ESC's for brushless motors synthesize 3-phase alternating current from direct current. That's why they cost so much.

You can reverse a brushless motor by exchanging any two of the three leads.

Don't forget the most important part... NO BRUSHES. Literally, the only thing that can wear out are the bearings, which are dirt cheap to replace.

Of course, just like any motors, you can overheat and destroy it, or as Genebond says "dork" it into the ground and break/bend the output shaft.

Some benefits of BL are :
Simplicity - permanently sealed ball bearings are the only parts to wear, so very low maintenance. No brushes to wear out, run in, or to make dust.
Efficiency -generally they make better use of the battery given equivalent power ratings.

I've had an astro 010 barely after they came out. It still runs like new and I'm sure I have hundreds of hours on it, if not thousands. I know they are more expensive but I am convinced in the long run they are cheaper. Protect your investment with a gearbox since it will take the impact if you crash. Less weight and more thrust and RPM for less current in. Brushless is the way to be!

What everybody said but be warned.. they are addictive! The first one you install leads to a craving for more!:D
