FYI, not all paint shops can mix RAL colors. I had a very well known paint shop in San Diego tell me that they couldn't mix it, but they would color match. The short of it was that I spent a small fortune for a lousy color match. Eventually I found another shop who could mix RAL codes and they did a fantastic job! Perfect match. Moral of the story, if the first shop doesn't do it, keep moving until you find one that does. |

At the Mid South I landed a little too hard (Stupid mistake) and have some minor delams in the center section in front of the wing tip joiner. Has anyone found a close color to the "Nan Orange" that a lot of the X2's come in? Thanks, Garry |

schrederman | Looks like I'll be flying this next weekend... waiting on a couple of servos and I'll be all set. My trailer door should be here next week, too...

schrederman | I now have one tip panel repaired, except for the final trim and sanding on one section of wiper. I used the book tape and had had problems. I ground that out and used the book tape again, and lapped it up over the existing wiper edge about 1/8". I used a strip of mylar that is intended as a surface gap seal for full scale sailplanes to guide the edge of the tape down and then taped the mylar in place... worked like a charm. I should be flying it again in a week or so...

schrederman | NO book tape in Weatherford...... except for the roll at my house. I had to order it from Amazon after looking all over town for it Saturday. Maybe tomorrow I'll get started, again, and get this fixed. Thanks again for all the help. I was going to buy a new pair of tips but the SOBs that broke into my trailer sunk that ship before it left the dock. That was going to cost about as much as a new sailplane... but I'm doing the work myself, and saving a ton. Parts ordered...

http://multimedia.3m.com/mws/media/9...-book-tape.pdf packing tape is usually around 2 mils thick vs 3.4 for the book tape. Book tape also makes really good hinge tape. It holds up to UV really well. Tom |

vespa | If you use something wide like packing tape you can cover most of the flap with masking tape first to make it easier/safer to remove the tape. And if your paint is particularly sensitive to tape, you can put a coat of wax on the flap first.

adodad | Jack - If you have the time, drop by an Office Depot and look for Scotch 845 Book Tape. This tape is what you are looking for. About 1.5" wide and 3x thickness of packing tape (just a guess). I've used this tape for years for various projects and have used it as wiper repair tape as described in previous post.

I believe you've hit the nail on the head. The tape I was using was too wimpy. It folded over at the flap LE and I didn't get the desired radius. I am probably going to double some packing tape and try this again... after carefully grinding away the pitiful first attempt. Thanks for all the help! Darth Disgusted... |

The control surface angle doesn't really matter when making the wiper because the tape should bend at a constant radius, starting tangent with the flap surface and ending just inside the wing sub-TE. That's why it's important to not crease the tape along the edge of the flap because it will change the whole shape. Theoretically this will give you a perfect wiper with a perfect tape-thickness clearance to the wing at any position, but in practice there are a few variables, not least of which is the location of the wing hinge cuts. Fortunately the wipers tend to err toward oversize and are very easy to sand. So the short answer is: You want the tape just a little longer than your desired wiper, and just barely tucked into the wing. The wiper should then end up too long and razor sharp, but is easy to sand to the correct length and bevel for reliable entry. |

What angle do you set the control surface at to get the proper curve? 20 degrees down? |
