As usual it was a bit windy but i got a better feel for the katana with the lighter power set up today.

With new motors coming out and lipos getting higher c ratings etc.. bigger planes flying on even smaller and lighter power systems is growing. From early on 55'' electrics were out of my pocket range do to the lipos you need to fly them and the step up in the rest of the gear you needed to. Eventually i got a couple 55'' planes and a couple 5s lipos for them, because 55s fly quite a bit nicer than smaller planes it was difficult to choose one size of plane that i could utilize the rest of my lipos with and fly all my planes without having to purchase more big expensive packs. I tryed parallel set ups on 3s and 4s 2200 packs with different motors and got some really good perfomance in the planes, depending on flying style 3s parallel packs with the right kv motor is probally plenty for a lot of pilots but ballistic rocks with high power set ups to. Ive flown the 55s on modest power levels and really powerful set ups, today i flew the kat on a 2100 4s 20c pack with a 45 amp esc with an extra heatsink and the torque 2814/820 motor with a 13x6.5 and some throttle managment . This is pushing the power set up a bit but it flew the kat ok,not ballistic put plenty of power to fly around and do basic aerobatics or sport fly.

This was the first time flying the kat with this gear, the radio settings were off a little and it needed to be trimmed as well.

Ive noticed theres a few blogs with items for sale.. so why not mine .

This summers been one of the rougher ones on the hobby budget so ive been selling some of my gear and planes. Income tax only comes once a year and i have some plans for future purchases so heres some items i have for sale.

1. Team Losi XXX-NT Sport with OS .18 Motor rtr with spare parts.
$150.00 with shipping, has normal wear and tear, the motor has less than a gallon through it.

2. 3DHobbyShop 55'' Katana airframe $75.00 Local Pick up only(illinois).
Plenty of wear and tear, good flying condition, set up for single elevator servo with aluminum joiner or could be set up with dual tail servos easily.

Send a pm if interested in either.

Except for the light rain and bugs it was very peaceful and great to fly in pretty calm air. No birds were harmed, the full scale plane flying by i wasnt even close to either . Took up the sr and the trex 450,the trex is almost dialed in and just gets better each time out,the new gyro and servo really helps and its been nice to start doing some basic 3D stuff with it this year.

Tryed something different for mounting cowls thats simple and looks clean without screws to hold it on.. just some 3m doublesided tape and it held of fine today. Heres some video of the flights.

You Can Click The Title On the embedded player and go to the video on youtube and select Watch In High Qaulity for better video qaulity

Starting to get more comfortable flying basic 3d with it but have a long way to go. The new gyro and tail servo has been the key but theres still some tuning left to get it flying its best. Havent had time to really mess with the heli set ups much but im really happy with how the 600 flys but still working on the 450 set up... planes are easy because i have a lot more expierence setting them up and theres less to set up. I was flipping low with the 450 and got on the collective a little slow .

Went flying.. started out fine with the sr,then i was coming in for a low pass and not aware of my surroundings and forgot theres a pole sticking up in the field . It happend quick and if it came into view a second quicker i probally still would of hit it. Its funny to watch and the sound it makes just cracks me up . Should have it repaired and flying again in a week or so,im trying to work a little on my heli flying.. last year i flew a heli maybe once a month and this year im trying to fly a heli each time i fly a plane,my plane flyings been improving but my heli flying has a lot of catching up to do. Im working on setups and basic 3d this year with the helis and there a lot of fun.

Im always interested in new technologys.. especially the technolgy many of us are familar with.. Lipos and brushless motors. Mountain biking and motorcross bikes are something i enjoyed when i was younger as well as trials riding etc.. all forms of riding have pedal powered counterparts these days. In the past couple years electric bicycles and dirt bikes have made a lot of progress.. Just take a look at some examples from youtube below. Electric street bikes, dirtbikes, atvs etc are in there infancy just like electric rc aircraft were decades ago but there off to a really good start with some of the current battery and electric motor technolgys that exist today.. Ive been eyeing some of those inexpensive little pocket dirtbikes they sell at auto parts stores etc.. they look like they would be a lot of fun and people are already modifying them for higher performance .

Well after the meeting with the ground sunday in 20mph+ winds the trex 450 needed some parts. Feathering shaft, new tail boom(couple big dents from blade strikes),paddles were chipped and the tail belt was missing some teeth . Carbon fiber tail boom, got some lighter paddles and flybar weights(blade 400 ones) and a new tail belt and put the hyperion carbon fiber blades back on it.. not sure if it was lack of 20mph wind or the new parts and some minor throttle curve changes but its flying a lot more to my liking for flips and basic stuff. The gyro needs some adjustment again but wasnt bad, hopefully if i start spending more time with the helis than i have my flying will start to progress like it has been with the planes .

Got a decent gyro and digital servo for the 450 finally.. flys normal well but need to set it up for stunt modes better, also need to set up my pitch and power curves better in the 450 for 3d. The 600 flew great in the wind.. it got bumped around but its a lot more stable than the 450 and i got somemore dual perspective video with it. I probally flew helis more the past two months than i did all last year, there fun but i really need to work on the 3d flying with them.. well with the 450,the 600 is just for normal flight(to expensive to mess around with)but flys great, maybe i'll get a trex 500 this year to if things start going better . Looking forward to getting some video from the air of planes eventually with the 600,id really like to get some footage of planes flying 3d low but at the big local field ive rarely seen anyone 3D planes and only a few guys 3D helis when ive been there.

Got my third and fourth flight in with the 600,even in the overcast skys and windy conditions it did well. Looking forward to more ap and video flights with it. The mount for the video gear is scrap L channel aluminum a buddy bought for me to repair his big gasser plane. Had some left over and it can be taken off easily when not flying ap by removing two allen head screws.

You can only fly in turbulant wind so long i guess, today the wind was changing directions and up to its usual no good out here. I had to laugh when it happend . The extra 300 sr Rocks! BTW the plane wasnt hurt .

I got a maiden in finally and got it set up decent and one flight after. Extremly stable compared to my 450(especially in wind)and having a good gyro with digital servo keeps the tail locked in VERY well compared to the set up i have on the tail for the 450(must get new gyro and digital tail servo for 450) . It was so nice to have the trex 600 fly so good from the start.. very little set up to the intial settings to the gyro and cg and trim was very close and only took a few minutes to get dialed in. I fly the helis off and on but mostly only have time to get a few flights in with the planes on the weekend and need to put more time in flying helis to.. the 600 is gonna be a sport flyer/ap and video ship. Really looking forward to getting some cameras on it for pics and onboard video soon. Heres a couple pics and the first two flights.. cant get over how stable and well it flys(bigger flys better) .

Its been really windy lately but i still fly.. not gonna let some wind stop me(id much less out here and i already dont put enough time in flying). A tornado touched down out this way yesterday and that wasnt fun, good thing i flew in the morning before it got here.. wouldnt of been much fun watching my planes get sucked into a funnel and trying to fly them out . Heres some video from the flying.. winds were kicking both days pretty good, power was out for 10 hours due to the tornado but came back on at around 5:30am today so i was able to get my packs charged for another couple flights on my new sr and my other stuff.

Really happy with the maiden on this one,a few changes on the radio settings and it will fly even better(i had the ailerons dialed down a bit low). Bigger flys better and a 55'' foamy is REALLY easy to fly, this thing is so stable in hover its rediculous . Flys really well when its not hovering to but i'll try more things out with it when i have more flights on it .

I get asked from time to time in threads and pm's about the noggin cam and have been meaning to post some detailed info all in one place for shooting video without a camera person so anyone can learn or try this method out easily.

The two most common questions:

1.What type of cam is it?

Its made by FlipVideo and i use the 30 minute ultra series versions, there 5 ounces and take 2 aa batteries and can be mounted easily on a hat,rc planes and other vehicles or hand held for shooting video of various types. You can find them at kmart, walmart, bestbuy and a whole lot of other places. The 30 minute versions go for $99.00 and sometimes less and $129.00-$149.00 for the 60 minute versions.

2.Hows It Mounted?

Ive used it a couple of ways to shoot video while i fly. The easiest to duplicate is on a standard baseball cap mounted on the visor. Youll want to angle it upward slightly because it points where your head points and not where your eyes look.. you fly less with head movment than eye movement so having it angled up slighly keeps the plane in frame during verticals etc a little easier. A velcro strap or rubber band can be used to get it angled for your flying style... ie the further you keep the plane out the larger the cameras field of view and if you spend most of your time flying a countinous pattern the plane will stay in frame.

As long as you have a point and shoot camera that wont strain your neck wearing it on the visor of a hat you dont need a new camera.. point and...Continue Reading
