Another great weekend. We had a nice breeze from the East, strong in the morning, but it became a little more intermittant in the afternoon. As the wind became less consistent, we finally had a shower roar through about 1:15, that shut us down for the rest of the day. Good day none the less, we actually got some nice combat in and lots of great altitude with the numerous thermals that came through on the breeze.

This Saturday was not sloper day. We had 0-5mph wind out of the North. As a sloping day, I give it "1". Now thermaling was another story. Only about 5 of us were on the winch, but everyone of us pulled a good 20 min flight at least once. Winching gets a score of "9" for the day, on the Paul Mittendorf scale.
Some highlights of the day include a Bald Eagle thermalling with us (very rare in South Florida), a new member joining us, Peter M (welcome Peter), and lots of full size air traffic coming through our flight area (calm air brought plenty of private plane owners out).

No blog for this week in case your wondering. We were rained out. However, a few of the guys went up on MLK day (I had to work...bummer). Larry L sent me a short video of the flying.

Saturday brought a 10mph breeze out of the East. By the time I arrived, about 11:45, we had quite a few planes up. Lift was good and there were lots of bird indicators (large circling groups of buzzards and seagulls). Everyone had a great time, although we did have a few mid-airs (ugh). All in all, a good day, I'd give it a "7".

Weather reports showed dry with a East wind. Wrong! N to NE with showers in the AM followed by with some occasional, light drizzle over the course of the day. Obviously, it didn't stop us. Flying in the NE bowl we had a decent wind (10mph) with fantastic lift coming off the powerplant in waves. We had huge plumes of steam coming out of the cooling towers, that looked like fog. Once you hooked one you were getting some great altitude.
As you might guess it was rated a good day by "the crew".

Happy Slermals!

This last Saturday was a "MEH". First time in ages that we have had a SW wind. Not a fan of the SW side of the hill. We had a decent wind of about 15mph, but the SW side really sucked. We ended up migrating to the South side close to the East of the hill, just above the SE bowl.
The flying was decent here, but we were in the "shadow" of the hill at times and plenty of sink rolled through.
Enjoy our last photos of 2012.

In honor of surviving the Mayan "end of days", we served coffee and cookies on Saturday morning. Actually, because of the cold snap (high was 62 F deg) I brought a" box of Joe" up and the wifey baked some cookies.
As far as flying went, it was a mixed bag. The wind stayed at about 12-15mph most of the day, but it varied from West to North, averaging NNW. THe flying was either great (straight out of the N to NNW) to terrible (on the NW corner). All in all not a bad day, after all, we proved the Mayans wrong!

Unfortuantely I arrived late on the hill. My wife had some errands for me to run and also I had to play the "gift giver santa", dropping off some gifts at the gate.
On the plus side, the wind was up, at least 15mph and coming almost straight on from the East. Plenty of fun and action when I arrived. The guys told me that earlier in the morning was the best. Enjoy the pics and happy holidays.

PS Some of the guys went to FSS #8 this weekend. Here's a report from there:

The winter winds were still with us this past Saturday. We had a 15mph breeze out of the East. It's still tough to get to the East slope, with the old West side road closed off and now overgrown with deep grass and bushes. But it didn't deter a sizeable crowd from showing up and parking three rows deep just above Powerline Rd. By 1:30 PM we had flown to our hearts content and lunch beckoned, so we shut down and got "off the top" before the 2 o'clock closing bell rang.

Last week we had predictions of light wind and it was rocking. This week we had strong winds predicted and we had "meh" winds. Actually we had about 10-12mph winds, so we shouldn't complain. But we were greedy and hoped for stronger stuff (weather channel was predicting 20+mph).
Actually we got some great flying in starting on the NE bowl and switching around to the East face over Powerline Rd at days end. The tally at the end of the afternoon was 12 smiles and 3 crashed planes (don't ask).

Mike

PS Amos shot all the pictures this week, which allowed me to fly. Thank you Amos!
PS Also, this coming weekend is the Buzzard's Tangerine TD contest in Ocala. If you are in the area, swing in.

Saturday was a surprise. Wind was predicted at 5-7mph and moving from NW to NE. Instead we had a pretty steady 10mph wind out of the NE. I actually put in quite a bit of flight time on my Falco (suprising….I know) and spent very little time on my camera. Thankfully, Amos shot most of the pictures this week (thank you Amos!).
Also Larry L just sent me some links to some short videos he shot this weekend. Thanks Larry!

Another weekend of wind! Yeah! We had an unusual 20-30mph wind out of the West. Haven't had any true sloping out of the West in ages. James had his newly repaired Schwing up and flying. Fun was had by one and all.

It’s been months since we had a strong blow. Saturday did not disappoint. One of our new members clocked 31 mph on his wind meter. The wind was out of the NE and was almost dead on to the NE Bowl. Lift out front was great, but if you came in close, it was very choppy and down right dangerous. DJ discovered this while maidening his new Schwing (don’t ask).

Sorry no blog in a long time. Between a couple weekends of rain and our Ocala FSS contest I haven't been up on the "hill" untill this weekend.
In the meantime we had a great contest in Ocala, see RCgroups thread:
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1686453
Also some of our guys (Jamie and Mike) hit the World Soaring Masters, see thread:
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...1556334&page=5

In the meantime, this weekend was not fanatastic. As Paul M said, "I would rate Saturday a 3 out of 10". We had about 7mph breeze out of the East. Which put about 1/2 dozen guys on the East slope.
I spent my time with the other 1/2 dozen fliers on the winch. All the way over on the West side. We had a lot of problems with the retriever and the thermals were very small. Not good. No crashes though, and only a small mid-air accident. So I guess it wasn't a bad Saturday.
Next weekend, I won't be up (work has called me in), so I hope someone gets some pictures and I hope some better flying conditions.

With Isaac bearing down on us, we made a beeline for the hill on Saturday. Unfortunately, because of rain squals, only a handfull of flyers turned out. We did reap the joy of 15-20mph winds, but the off and on drizzle finally drove us away. We were actually fortunate. As we left, we found ourselves getting bogged down in deep mud. A little bit longer and we would have been getting towed off the top.

Mike
PS Don't forget we have FSS #5 in Ocala this weekend. Should be good weather...see you there:

Another hot Saturday. We had a slight breeze out of the South, gave us a little respite. DJ and I tried the South/SE Bowl, but unless you had electric (DJ did), it was fruitless. Most of the guys winched on the Westside. With the Ocala FSS contest around the corner, it was probably a good idea to practice, and we got plenty of that.
