Looking at my landing path from the dusk flight. Looks like I had a awesome decent right onto the runway. Very happy about the outcome with that!



Now to flip it over to a mode where I can line up and flip the switch for touchdown!

I've been thinking about building a VASI / PAPI for my glide slope indicator. To test I decided to run some LED's on a plywood strip. Didn't work to well in the day light, but worked really well last night. I was able to see the LED strip on camera and pull off a dusk flight. Here's the YouTube result..

The only problem that I can see so far is the fact I want to put my AFH on my HUD over the top of the lights and follow it down. Good idea in theory. However in practice don't place the lights 5 feet from the end of the runway. I'll probably roll with it again except this time place it a few extra feet from the end up the runway. Both red or white was clearly visible in the camera once lined up.

The nice thing about ArduPlane is the fact I can look at my flight data and see how I did. Since I installed APM I've been doing most of my landings via FPV. This is usually done by flipping into Fly-by-Wire and pushing the plane into the decent. One thing I noticed is I'm gaining altitude before I begin my decent for landing. This tells me that mentally I'm trying to bring the plane up to meet the glide slope and then descending from there. What I should be doing is holding my altitude until I intersect the glide slope and then go from there. Usually it happens right after my cross wind leg and turn on to final. Something tells me I need to pay attention to the altimeter more when I come out of that turn!

I don't know how much cheaper I could get with this. Decided to build a H-Quad with parts from Home Depot. It uses some plywood strips and some L brackets you'd use on fences. All together the frame costs about $10. Couple that with a HK Quad Copter controller flashed with the X config, Turnigy motors and speed controllers.

Honestly the GoPro costs more than everything on the quad combined.




I did blow up one of the Turnigy speed controllers on accident. So I'm using the 30 amp Jetty speed controllers on the back for now.

A few folks have asked how I mount my GoPro to my Skywalker. Plus provide Pan and Tilt. Well finally remembered to take pictures of the setup while I was out at the field today. First off I use two servos. One is a HiTec HS-82MG, the other is a HiTec HS-125MG glider wing servo. I went the metal gear route since I was sick of stripping nylon gears. Secondly I went with HiTech servos since I've had good experience with them. They don't get interference from the VTX. I'd highly suggest going the metal gear route if you're going to mount a heavy camera like the GoPro.

First I did was mount the servo to the back of the open camera box...



I then ran a wire from that servo down to the GoPro mount. Then bent a L and drilled a hole in the GoPro mount. This gives me the ability to remove the camera if I have the desire to. The sticky GoPro mount is then mounted on the servo horn. I bought the biggest one I could find. If you can find circle ones do it. It'll give you more stability. You have to drill a hole through the sticky mount go get to the servo screw. Then drill into the mount from the bottom site. Place some tiny screws through the servo horn into the sticky mount. It'll ensure the thing doesn't fly off on a hard landing.



On the bottom side of the canopy I simply doubled up two 1/8" plywood strips giving me a 1/4" mounting stick. Then used two short wood screws to hold the servo in place..

Ever since I saw the T-34 and it's wide open canopy.. One thing came to mind.. How can I put a camera in this bird and fly! I eventually broke down and bought a T-34 after seeing one fly out at NVRC.




As everyone knows the GoPro is a awesome camera and can fit on most FPV like planes. In this case it's a perfect fit under the canopy! I went ahead and ordered one from Horizon Hobby via Ebay. After the canopy arrived in record time and I decided to go to work..

First thing's first. I wanted to open up the front of the canopy so I have a clear shot out the window...

Tested out the OpenAero Nano in the Skywalker yesterday. I haven't felt precision flying like that since I left pattern. The flight is sold even on a older V1 Hobby King quadcopter board.

The winds kicked up to about 10-15 out on the bay yesterday. Here's a video of my crabbing across a diagonal crosswind..
