Inspired by the Hobby King Beer Lifter competition. My friends Matt, Luke, and I decided to partner up and build this contraption. It's a dodecacopter in Y12 configuration. My own design chassis, with 3D printed parts and square carbon tubing. Custom bus capable of 300A. All electrical components bulleted for easy maintenance. Assembled without a single fastener, only zip ties. AUW ~3000g. Peak rated power around 4.4kW

HK Flight Controller V2.1
XXcontroller Y6 V1.5i Firmware
HK 4S/5000mAh Nanotech 25-50c Battery
HK DT-700 Motor x 12
HK Plush 25A ESC x 12
Gemfan 12x4.5 Props x 12 (6CW and 6CCW)

100% HK sourced components

Dodecacopter showing off (2 min 51 sec)

This thing flies better than I had hoped. Flew great on stock FC firmware settings, all I did was add some "I" to the PID loop, turn down the pitch and roll, and add some Expo. Very stable and it is an aerial hotrod! Tons of power, it is begging me to flip it.

It has been very educational to see the effects of a Y configured multicopter. I have been gathering lots of data which will be useful for further projects.

GQuad Hollister FPV (3 min 43 sec)

I was doing just fine until I decided to hover close to the ground, next to a jump, when it was really windy... It just kinda pushed me down and I didn't react very quickly. Rear blades contacted the slope behind me causing the quad to flip. Minor damage, good thing I can just print new parts and props are cheap Lesson learned, minimum 20' ground clearance during gusty conditions. Save the "close ups" for optimum conditions.

Still, everything worked flawlessly (except the pilot) and I am happy with the footage I got. I just wanted more

My latest and greatest. Motorcycles and quads go together like peanut butter and jelly.

I posted a thread about it a while ago

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1543311

But I figure it deserved it's own blog entry.

It's 530mm shaft-shaft. I rapid proto'd the frame parts and used the 10mm square carbon booms from HK. I keep forgetting to weigh it, but I think it's a little over 1500g in it's current configuration.

kk5.5e board with 1.5f firmware
FrSky HV Rx
DT700 motors with 11x4.7 props.
HK 20A ESC's
4s 5000mah nanotech
Eagle Tree V4 data logger
Eagle Tree Barometric Altimeter
Eagle Tree OSD
GoPro HD
900Mhz 500mW vTx

It draws about 220W at hover, the 4s 5000mAh battery gives me ~74Wh, which means I can fly for over 20 minutes. At full throttle it just touches 1kW power! This gives me something like 6kg of thrust at full power, so carrying a couple kg payload should be no problem.

From concept

To reality

Well, the fates have smiled upon me and blessed me with a free and serviceable Lazair Series 2. It's a long story and maybe I'll tell it later.

Quick Summary; I plan on converting this plane to electric, in collaboration with Dale Kramer (creator of the Lazair), who has recently done the same with his. We have already been in communication and he has been a tremendous help. It has also become apparent that he is dead-serious about bringing his production Electric Lazair to market. I am proud to be a part of this electric airplane revolution. I envision a future where electric planes are plentiful and just as popular as motorcycles and boats (one can dream, right?).

My 1st full immersion FPV flight on the slopes. Wind was wild and unruly, gusting to 25-30 mph. You can really see the plane bounce around when I get close to the slope, landing was "interesting". Glad I made it down in one piece.

Video was a bit overexposed, I'll get it dialed next time.

My 1st full immersion FPV flight (Yay). The whole flight is flown with my goggles on. I guess I set up too close to the treeline so I couldn't fly to my full range. But on the whole I am quite pleased with my 1st FPV flight.
