Riley Jensen, was diagnosed with T1D (type 1 diabetes), at the age of 10. He thought his dream of becoming a pro motocross rider was now over and he was devastated. It was the only time he questioned, “Why Me?” After spending days in the hospital learning what it would now take for him to survive and thrive, he couldn’t wrap his head around how to work it into motocross- one of the most extreme and physically challenging sports around. It seemed impossible. Moments before his early release from the hospital, a JDRF mentor dropped by with their ‘Bag of Hope’ and shared an inspirational story of having T1D for over 15 physically active, and healthy years. She was living proof that he would be healthy again and could stay that way. Checking his blood and counting his carbohydrates to find out how much insulin he’d need to take a shot of in order to eat; at least four shots a day and checking his blood at least six times a day no longer weighed on him; because his dream was still possible!
