This is my first post of any kind on rcgroups, so I'll just dive in. I haven't been flying RC airplanes for long (two years). I've built a few foam and balsa planes, bought a few planes, and crashed a few planes. One of the planes I crashed was a cheap EDF I had bought used at a swap-meet. The ESC/BEC dying caused it to auger in at a pretty good clip, and little of the airframe was left after meeting the ground. But, the EDF itself still seems to be functional, and so I started to plan to build some sort of EDF plane to put it in.

I looked around for a good plan, but in the process, fell in love with the notion of cutting the fuselage from foam slabs with a hot wire. After a bit of poking around, I decided I wanted to try building an F-86 Sabre to house the EDF. What I didn't realize at the time was that the F-86 has a fairly distinctive fuselage cross section, and I would need to reproduce the cross section to be happy with the result.

I had, by this point, spent a good bit of time learning Sketchup, and so wanted to start by drawing the F-86 in Sketchup. I started by looking around the net for a drawing with fuselage cross sections. The best drawing I had had a handful of cross-sections drawn out, and so I thought I was set. I traced the cross-sections out in Sketchup, and started stacking them in the correct location on the side view. It was at that point that I realized the sparse handful of cross sections weren't enough information to give me the semi-...Continue Reading
