I spent more time sanding, added a bit more wood filler, and then I added the spinner I picked up today for $22.99 These Maxx folder spinners aren't cheap.

There was a gap between the spinner and cowl that needed to be filled in, so I used a trick I learned from Mark F.

Then I had to sand a little off the stab. It rubbed the fin in the front.

Finished off by carving and sanding the canopy to clear the wing.

So, it looks like I need to do one more sanding of the airframe and it's time for covering I need to find some 400 grit sandpaper. The finest I've found is 300.

I am really excited to get this plane in the air where it belongs

I added some ply reinforcements around the screw holes to keep the screw heads from digging into the balsa. They're a little unsightly but I think they're necessary.

Then I spent some time sanding the fuse. Actually a lot of time sanding. If you don't have 60 grit sandpaper I recommend it as it makes shaping canopies and nose blocks quick(er) work.

Finished up by putting filler in the dings and the fin's seam. One more session with the sanding blocks and the fuse and wing will be ready to cover.

I still need to carve the bottom of the canopy so it goes over the wing, and that should be pretty simple.

Got up early this morning and made more progress on the BOT.

* epoxied the wing bolt plates into the fuse
* drilled and tapped for the nylon bolts
* filled in the gaps between the fuse and the front part of the wing
* FINALLY installed the tubes for the spoiler strings. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be......Continue Reading

There was about a one hour window this afternoon where the winds were calm and the thermals were popping.

I tagged one, and had I stayed with it my Mirage would probably be in Texas by now. I tried to avoid getting sucked up too high, and I'd guess I was up around 2,000 feet which is plenty high for city flying.

Here's some pictures Aiken with my Möbius. I have it set up to snap a photo every 30 seconds.

I glued on the rest of the fin, and that really firmed things up back there.

Then a cut out was made for the rear rubber band hold down wing dowel and I put the horizontal stab and wing on the fuse to make sure the wing didn't need any shimming to level it with the stab, and ,it didn't

Next step? I epoxied 3/16" sq rails in the wing saddle area, drilled holes in the wing for the wing bolts and used pieces of paper draped over the wing opening to figure out where the plywood plates go. If your wondering why I am going to have the wing bolted on and held on with rubber bands, it's ok. It's explained in the pics below.

Top sheeting - check
Motor bolted to firewall - check
Cowl fashioned from a balsa block - check

I checked on carbon fiber pushrods at the hobby shop today. Good Lord, they are more rigid than similar sized piano wire. Plus they are a wee bit pricey. I guess the advantage is that they are lighter than steel. Anyway I thought they would have more flex and work in my sharp bending tubes. But they don't have enough flex factor, so I picked up thin music wire and I'll solder some threaded tubes on the ends.

- Roughed out the hatch and added stays and a dowel up front.

- Glued fuse bottom sheeting down.

Tonight I got the pushrod tubes installed. Only had to use one Bandaid.

The steel rods I have are too thick and do not move freely, so I'll have to get some thinner music wire at the hobby shop tomorrow. I may even try carbon fiber rods if someone at the shop can show me how to do it.

I have been thinking about the color scheme. I want to keep it simple and light. I have had good results with Ultracote Light, and although the color selection is limited, it is very strong and very light. I have a $15 off coupon from Horizon so I may go shopping tonight!

I think the next step is to install the fin. So I put that off as long as I could by putting the servos in the fuse.

Then I spent a fair amount of time tapering the fuse's triangle stock so the taper would match the fins thickness. During one of my trial dry run fin checks I snapped the rear part of the fin where the balsa fin part attaches to the ply fin part

This necessitated reinforcing the whole joint with light fiberglass soaked with thin CA. I need still to sand it smooth.

Then I worked on the spoiler tube exit holes. I have a feeling their install is going to get ugly.

Too windy to fly. For the balloons and the rc sailplanes. Gusts up to 40mph

Between building a box turtle habitat in the basement and all the other weekend crap I had to do, I got a couple hours of build time in on the BOT.

Wing's LE is sanded and rounded, and I'm leaning toward a nylon bolt wing hold down set up. After that's all noodled out I'll put the final piece of top sheeting on. Also, I need to get the fuse done enough to fit wing bolt plates.

Speaking of the fuse, all the formers are epoxied in and the servo rails too. It's even straight.

The wing's top sheeting is all done, except the area behind the spar. Need to get the spoiler tubes in before covering that area.

The firewall and forward former are both the same width, so I went ahead and glued them to one of the fuse sides. Tomorrow morning I may get the fuse sides joined. Or maybe I'll work n the spoiler tubes. Decisions decisions.

The weather was beautiful and the wind very calm today. There's a small school yard about 3 blocks from my house that is perfect for 2 meter e sailplanes. Here's some pictures taken aloft with my Möbius. The plane is a Mountain Models 2 meter Jester. The lift was pretty light, but I managed to speck out twice. More top wing sheeting. This wing has top sheeting only, so it's not a D box wing it's 1/2 of a D box. Anyway whilst the glue dries I again turned my attention to the fuse. The plans show triangle stock for the entire fuse bottom, and a portion of the top.

Then I added some carbon fiber to the balsa only portion of the fuse sides using thin CA.

Once again slow progress. This going to work every day really wears on a person.

While the wing top sheeting was drying the firewall was built. Also I made some "stops" for the fin to assure the fin / elevator is at the right angle of attack.

The fuse sides get 1/4" angle stock top and bottom, and before gluing they need relief carved into them where they overlap the fuse doublers.

It may not look like much, but I got the spoiler's servo placement noodled out and fashioned a platform for it to rest on. I will simply tape it into place after the wing is covered. Here's some pictures of the hatch.

So next up I will start the top sheeting. I will have to do it over 4 evenings, so I can start on the fuse while the glue dries.

Now my wing is all in one piece

I made the front dihedral brace with a poster board template and then used it as a template for the rear brace. I used 1/8" birch ply. It may be overkill, but it will still be far lighter than a steel rod.

Last up I added the center rib.

My plan is to put a servo in the center of the wing to actuate the spoilers. I'm still thinking about how I'm going to do this. The ribs are just ever so slightly slimmer than the thickness of the servo.

Attaching the tip panels was straight forward, no problem!

To prepare for the dihedral brace I had to cut a sliver of balsa off the bottom sheeting so that the braces can be glued to the bottom spar. So tomorrow I'll make the dihedral brace and glue it in place!...Continue Reading
