Episode 66 - Shrike Flight Testing (11 min 3 sec)

This episode we tested the Shrike after making small adjustments to CG, throws, etc. to add additional stability and control. We also tested it for general wing loading with dead weight to simulate carrying FPV gear and an APM2. It flew just fine with an extra 250 grams of dead weight, which is a little more than the equipment we'll be adding.

Episode 65 - Successful Shrike Re-Maiden! (12 min 40 sec)


We successfully re-maidened the Shrike! Turns out that our elevons had excessive throws, we had insufficient expo's and the wing mounted too far to the nose causing a tail heavy environment.

Episode 61 - Building the Shrike (6 min 10 sec)

building the Shrike, and had to overcome a lot of challenges we had
not faced before; painting the foam, applying a good sealant (packing
tape) on foam that had been painted with acrylic paint, and mounting
these kinds of wings to the airframe.

If all goes well and weather permitting, we should get in our maiden this week.

Episode 58 - Raptors, Novas, and Airspeed (30 min 17 sec)

Episode 57 - Nova Crash, Raptor Speed (13 min 31 sec)


Welcome Nick to the show!

This week we tried to compare the Nova's max speed to the Raptor, however a radio Tx/Rx failure occurred during the Nova's takeoff, causing a massive crash that nearly destroyed the Nova. Never use a 5 year old cheap Tx/Rx on your handmade custom airplane.

We then tried to get a max airspeed for the Raptor, however our airspeed sensor continually gave suspect readings. We decided to go back to the drawing board to consider what we should do next.

A tough week, but it was a lot of fun having Nick on the show. More to come!

Episode 56 - Raptor Flights (9 min 16 sec)

This week we adjusted the control surfaces on the Raptor to get it all balanced and flew it a few times to get more experience and test the airframe's performance. I've got to say, flying wings, and the Raptor specifically, have far exceeded my expectations... it flies great!

Its very, very stable, has an excellent power to weight ratio that allows it to climb indefinitely, enough control surface and authority to allow a perfect balance of control and stability. I found myself flying it over and over until the battery died (about 20 minutes of flight) which is pretty rare, I usually get kinda board and quit.

Anyway, the Raptor is awesome.

Next week we'll compare the Raptor to the Nova and see how they perform when compared to each other.

Episode 55 - Successful Raptor Maiden Flight! (11 min 15 sec)


It flies!!!

Finished the Raptor this week, it was a blast to make, I think I'm falling in love with flying wings. After installing all the electronics I was super happy to discover that their placement made for a great nose heavy CG, and no dead weight would be needed.

Took it out to the field, did some range testing and CG testing, and then used a "frisbee" style hand launch. Took a few tries, but I finally got it in the air.

Flies amazing, very very agile, too agile actually. I'll need to reduce the throws on the elevons to add more control. It glides very, very well. It may even glide better then the Nova, seriously, that is how well it glides.

This week I focused on getting the Nova ready for the FPV system I'll be installing, and it flew great!

I added a new wing that has a larger wingspan (62in.) and better locations for the ailerons (closer to the wing tips for greater leverage). This added a little more stability, slowed the airplane down a little, and allowed for the additional weight.

I also tested the wing loading by using the heavier battery (a 4.4Ah battery that weighs in at 12oz) and 4oz of extra dead weight to simulate the FPV gear that will be added next week.

Lastly, flying it in heavy wind (10-12 mph) was a pretty good test of it's general strength and stability. It handled it very well, and has inspired me to get some stabilization to help me out.

So far so good! Can't wait to FPV maiden the Nova!

Episode 41 - Nova Flight Testing (13 min 39 sec)


This week I did some general flight testing of the Nova to confirm it’s CG location and to determine it’s general flight efficiency.

It consumed more amp-hours than the GeekStar did, however after further consideration I believe measuring efficiency “per hour” doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. Instead, a “amp hours per mile” would be more appropriate. In this case, I think the Nova would win out as it’s cruising speed at half throttle is easily 2 or 3 times faster than the GeekStar with the same throttle setting. More testing is indicated.

Episode 40 - Nova Maiden Flight (6 min 36 sec)


The Nova Flies! And quite well at that!

Added 10 oz of weight in the nose to make sure it was nose heavy for the maiden, and that turned out to be much too much! Skipped off the grass on take off! Took out 4 oz, and will be taking out even more as I get a better feel for what works.

As it’s designed to be a FPV/AP airplane, the nose weight will be replaced by FPV/AP equipment.
