Sbeen a while and things have taken a sudden push in the right direction again.
Firstly the long awaited new plane is nearing its completion, It's an ARF and its a Lockheed Lightning P-38 made by phase 3. It's been a doddle to put together, straight forward screws. I am utterly chuffed to get my hands on it.
Specially since it took almost 3 months to locate one and get it shipped here with help from my UK based niece (Thanks Mireille)

The transmitter is set up for mixing flapperons, nosewheel and rudder (rudder to be installed after a few flights) waiting on the 3s 2200 mAh lipo's and deans plugs from 2ehandsrc.nl to arrive dead nervous to maiden her

On the Nieuport Delage front I'm happy to report that, after a lot of digging around, i finally printed some tissue with a Laser printer and all i can say is WOW...
An HP Laserjet 2600 came across my path and with its fairly straight paper path seemed a nice candidate for my tissue printing exploits.

As i am using pledge parket plus (future floor wax) as a covering agent I wasnt able to use an inkjet printer seeing as it uses water solluable ink.

i glued a piece of oversized tissue to a sheet of A4 paper and threw some graphics together and a patch of grey and some red white and blue, printed a test sheet and then fed the tissue/paper sheet through
this will make covering my lil friend so much easier

After getting fed up with how the nose looked, i finally corrected it, extending the curve of the fuse to the nose, and i am chuffed with the result

Seeing as the germans destroyed all these planes when they occupied France, its hard to find any info on the cockpits or the instruments that should be in it. So i was happy to find a picture of a period combination instrument displaying airspeed, horizontal and vertical pitch and turning speed. after photoshopping it and printing it at greatly reduced size ( 8 x 11 mm.) i put it into the cockpit and it looks the part ...Continue Reading

I made the cockpit edge today, and a coworker that makes plastic carmodels gave a test piece i made a coat of paint, he is quite the wiz with an airbrush, and i like it allready even though he will give it another light coat to make it even.

Made and fitted the rings to form the rim and made another simple tire from mousemat rubber and i think the result is pretty good.

Still think the rim should be lower, but well that's why this is a prototype

Having some experience with the odd unwanted rough landing, i was pondering suspension on my lil plane. so the usual methods passed by like elastic bands, thin steel wire, but suddenly my new found love for carbon rods and automotive designs sparked off the idea to make a torsion bar suspension, using the torsion stiffness of a length of 1 mm. carbon rod together with a plastic tube with 1mm. inside diameter as a bush bearing. (thanks go out to Yvo for letting me bounce ideas of him, always a joy

so I made a test piece first by drilling an inch long 1 mm. hole in a piece of balsa and fitting a bush around a piece of carbon rod.

Enlarging the end of the hole to take the plastic tube as a bearing.

Then I drilled two holes through the wood to coincide with the end of the rod, so i could fix it in the wood with thin CA glue.

after glueing the torsion rod, a suspension arm and the wheel axle together i glued the plastic bush in the wood, pushed the rod through the bush and fixed the end of the rod with CA , leaving me with about an inch of carbon rod as a torsion bar. the inch was a bit of a guestimate, and on the plane itself i made it a litle longer. i glued it in so the suspension arm was at about 15 degrees down, so when i would allign to the wood and glue in the stop, there would be some initial tension.

Well it took some pondering, but that's the fun for me when scratch building anything, but the rudder is working

The 0.06 mm. fishwire is directly tied to the act then threaded back to the rudder, through a piece of micro silicone tube and looped back through the same tube. This way i could adjust the length of the two pull wires and glue them.

To link them to the rudder i glued two size 24 fishhooks into a length of the same silicone tube and glued that to the rudder.

Well the plantraco receiver is in a lil drawer in front of the cockpit now, so i can pull it into the cockpit opening and push the battery on and push the drawer back closer to the cg.

Also put the rudder actuator behind the cockpit opening right under the top rib.

Seeing as its only 0.4 grams i am not too worried bout putting it slightly more to the back. specially as i am aiming to set up a pull-pull system with 0.06 mm fishingwire and size 17 fishhooks hooked to the actuator, i wasnt going to make the lines too long.(what do people catch with these tiny fishhooks? guppies?)

the heavier elevator actuator is going to go low in the cockpit so the wires from that wont interfere with the rudder wires.

Putting in the motor and gearbox was quite an elaborate operation but that too went where it was supposed to, and at last there was a lil life in the lil fuse

unfortunately my camera gave up and i'll have to borrow one to make some close-up pics.
