Ok normally i just make my own from foam but i had to byuy an ARF this time. The electrifly Spad 13 is a great kit and well worth the money. I was not able to procure the recomended motor for this one but figured the equivilent was the E-Flight 400. Trouble here is the Axi uses a three screw mount with the shaft comming out the stationary side of the motor and the E-Flight is a four screw mount with the shaft on the spinning side of the motor. Being the creative sucker i am i did what any good hobbyist would do, I made the dam thing fit. Switching the shaft was easy enough (I hate those little spring clips though), next i centered the motor in the mount that came with the plane and found that one hole lined up perfectly with the slightly closer mount holes in the motor. Hmmmmmm an idea forming (to late died of lonelyness) Anyway with that one hole i found the two adjacent holes were under the solid portion of the Elecrifly Mount. Ok get out the drill and make a pair of holes. Then i took the standard four hole mount from the E-Flight motor and cut outer parts leaving only the four holes that u attach to the motor itself. Placing the electrifly mount on the motor first then the E-flight mount over it i put the screws to it. using washers to fill the gap at the forth hole left open by the Electrifly mount. The whole thing was nice and solid allowing motor placement as if it was an axi motor Yet still allowing for a replacement with an axi later if needed. Using an e-flight 25 am speed controller and park zone 1800 3 cell lipos this plane has fantastic performance. thanks to Bill McNeal i can now share a couple of pics of. Oh yeah i put up Pics of my Nieuport 11 Version 4 on the nieuport blog with plane specs if u care to look there.
Anyone who is into WWI Birds has to do a Fokker Dr1. Only trouble is all the Arf's out there are Richtoffen's. Common the Man shot down more planes while flying his Albatross D3 than he did with his DR1. Anyway I digress. I Looked around and found Foamy pplanes by Steve shumate and gave it a try. I also decided to use Ernst Udet paint scheme seeing how he was Germany's #2 Ace and actually survived the war. I've done several of steves planes, notably the f-14, f-15 and f-18 and feel he does a beautiful job of putting them together and every one has looked sharp, too bad my flying skill don't match up to his design skill. Anyway for DR1 #1 I did the plans verbatum. and even though I knew better i did the aelerons on all thre wings like the plan says. That plane was not easy to fly at all. after its first crash i took out the aeleron in the middle and lower wings and it was much more stable. but still a little loose in the tail. Finally it got away from me and crashed into a pile of Foam on a Saturday. With That I was challenged to have a DR1 flying the next day. #2 was born. and I met the challenge. in less than 24 hours using a few good parts from #1 a new plane was born, this time with real depron instead of blue core. I got about two months out of #2 and you can see the end result. Several Months later I scratch built #3 using an old Gullows kit as a guide Measuring a 3mm (on the guillos kit) to 5mm ratio. This one flew absolutly great. Gentle and Docile with no bad tendancies at all. unfortunatly after about one month a speed controller drop cut power to everything and that ended that one. i was impressed enough with the way that one flew that i will be doing it again soon and will log #4's build here. meanwhile here are pics of the three.
My favorite Computer game of all time was Red Barron 3d. It was the first game to use massive multiplayer servers. Durring that time I became Known in the RB community for my Lime Green painted N11. I would use that old outdated plane even against the Dreaded DR1 and actually go Fokker Hunting with it. It got to the Point that other players would actually avoid me if i was flying the Bebe. Naturally when i got into flying RC i would want to fly a Bebe once again. The trouble is that the only N11's i could find were large Gassers. Being Devoted to Electric power I Started honing my skills building Scratch Foamies from Other Peoples Plans. Several (ok quite a lot) crashes later i finally decided to try to build the N11. Having only pictures from the RB3d manual and the old Richtoffens war board game (now i have a janes manual) I carfully measured out the dimentions and started drawing on a couple of blank sheets of cheap 3m Blucore. The End result was my first N11. Sorry to say this plane met it's demise in a head on collision with a giant scale Yak. Presently i am flying Version 4 for the past 8 months now. It has had several nisshaps and is about to give way to version 5. I hope to do a whole build thread for that one for anyone else who may want to build one. The PDF file is the parts cutout for any who may be intrested.
