Last week I picked up my own drum set. I had been borrowing my friends kit and hauling it back and forth to band practice every week. That was a hassle and it was adding a lot of wear and tear on his really nice Pearl drum set.

At first we were just looking to add some cymbals to the existing set. For some nice ones were were looking at around $200 or more for a set of Zildjian or Sabian's. While cruising Craigslist, we found a guy that had these listed. A set of entry level Pacific drums, a Sabian cymbal pack, a Pacific double bass pedal, and a top of the line Pearl hi-hat stand. It was a complete set up for less than the price of the cymbals!

The heads on the drums were shot so I had to order new ones. That also meant that I would have to tune the drum set because all the heads were coming off. I replaced the smashed up drum heads with some high end Evans heads and 4 hours of tuning later I had VERY inexpensive kit that sounds as good if not better than the Pearl I was playing before.

While searching craigslist last week I came across something I never thought I would see. I had found an OS3 Fish out of Water longboard, and surprisingly it was in pretty nice shape. The special thing about this longboard is that it is cut from a miniature surfboard blank. Because of this, many of these OS3 are in sad shape, the board itself is strong but it doesn't like smashing into things.

These boards came standard with Revenge trucks, which are torsion trucks which allow you to carve back and forth very tightly and extremely effortlessly. I have never ridden a surfboard but these trucks are said to give longboards a very unique "surfy" feel. As far as I can guess, it is true, it has a very different feel as compared to any longboard I have ever ridden.

I have been looking at one of these for a while. When the Corsair came out I wanted that instead, but after reading some reviews and talking to the guy at the hobby shop, I settled on the T-28.

Now that these little airplanes are less than $100, I figured why not. I have flown the micro helicopters and have been very impressed, so I hope the T-28 lives up to my expectations as well. I am a little nervous because it is so small and seems rather delicate. The wind is currently pretty strong and gusty, so hopefully the evening when things calm down I can give this airplane its maiden flight.

This afternoon was the first free afternoon I have had in a very long while. I decided to do something I have wanted to but never had the time, a time lapse video of the changing clouds.

My goal with this is to work my way up to a night sky time lapse where it looks like the stars spin around like a wheel in the sky. For now though, this is the first one I have ever done and I think it turned out pretty good.

My blog has been neglected a lot recently so here is a quick post to get it back on track,.

Last week, I was looking at the other forum I frequent, oldminibikes.com and saw this great thread on how to make your own "stinger" exhaust pipe. I looked through our scrap bin at home and didn't find anything usable, so after scrounging around at school, I found a perfect piece of thin-wall tubing on the remnant rack.

They way you make the taper is you first cut a wedge shape out of the pipe using a plasma cutter. Then using a vice, you squeeze the pipe so the gap closes up, once you do this you end up with a rough tapered pipe. To smooth things out, I used the anvil and a hammer to coax the pipe back into a round shape.

Once you are happy with the results, you weld the seam back together. To finish things off, we took a soft grinding wheel and ran it along the surface, giving it a polished look. You could also paint it but I think it will look cool once the hot exhaust turns the pipe a bluish purple tint.

The only thing left to so is to put a spark arresting screen into it, because wildfires are not so good.

This past week in metal shop I had some spare time. Normally I have been working on the lathe but since there are two kids per lathe, the past few days have been my days off.

At the back of the shop we have a big barrel of scraps and parts, and looking through it I found lots of old crusty welding rods. Some of the other kids were making some stuff with them and one of the designs inspired me. After I took all the coating off the rods I made a nice little hat. The Element logo on the front took me just as long to make as the rest of the hat did.

Today I bought something I have always wanted. A SURFBOARD!!

I was driving around this morning and I saw a garage sale. I noticed the surfboard leaning against the house and said, "If it is still there when I drive home I'll stop." Well it was so I stopped and took a look.

What I found was a 6' Carl Burns Custom. It's really rough, it looks like it got left in a car that sat in the sun. The top of the deck looks much better now that I scraped off all the old wax and grime. I bottom on the other hand needs some work. There is a large area of de-lamination that is all bubbled and wrinkled. This area will have to be cut away and repaired along with the nose, a piece on the rail, and a small patch on the tail. The trick is going to be making the repairs without making them SUPER obvious. That won't be too hard though because the base is a brownish yellow. Also there are some previous repairs where the fiberglass cloth is exposed.

The best thing about this board hands down was the price! I paid less that $10 for it. There may have been a reason, but with a little work, even if it won't look super nice, this board will be as good as new.

Yesterday we took a drive to Lake Tahoe. Instead of taking the freeway we took the long way up through the mountains. About a third of the way there we came to a spot where the USFS was doing a control burn. There was smoke everywhere.

Once we got out of the smoke there were lots of trees that were just gold with yellow leaves. As we were driving we even saw some people driving their cattle. Once we got to Lake Tahoe, we went to where you could see the Salmon spawning. There are thousands of fish and lots of birds. Usually you can see a bear feeding in the river, but we didn't this time.

My pictures of the salmon aren't very good because I had my 75-300mm lens and that doesn't take very good close up pictures.

Lately I have started playing Flight simulator a lot again. I have had FSX (Microsoft Flight Simulator X) for a coupple of years but I had never really played it enough to learn all the functions in some of the planes.

That all changed a few months ago when I found a group of FSX users here on RCG and started playing multiplayer online. I did have to buy the Acceleration Expansion Pack to make everything work seamlessly, but even without it, it was still fun. We normally fly navy jets like the F-14,T-45 and the F-18, and shoot carrier landings, but every now and again we like to try our hand at bush flying or the "heavies" like the 747.

One really rewarding experience is making an ILS (Instrument Landing System) approach where the airplane lands by using the autopilot. This is a challenging and sometimes frustrating endeavor but one nice landing makes it worth it.

One thing that I find annoying is that my screenshots turn out WAY blurrier than the actual sim. There is a way to fix this but I just haven't done it yet. So if the picture quality bad, I am sorry.

I'll be posting more pictures soon after I bring them over from the other computer.

On Tuesday the CHP(California Highway Patrol) Eurocopter AS 350 landed across the street at the junior high to pick up a injured person that was in a car crash just down the street. Since they circled over our house twice before landing I had a chance to grab my camera and walk over to take some pictures.

I had a hard time getting the shutter speed low enough to get the rotors blurred but once i did my pictures looked WAY better than the ones that the rotors were frozen in space. Out of about 20 pictures, here are the best ones...

Last week we went to Yosemite for three days. We went hiking and biking most days and on Thursday we went swimming even though the water was cold. We didn't make it all the way up to Glacier Point because the road was TERRIBLE. They were repaving the roads so most of it was gravel as dirt, and since there were no lines on the road some people were driving right down the middle really fast.

I saw my first Yellow Bellied Marmot, so that was pretty exciting and then we had a bear in the campsite next to us one morning because some people left their food out. Since it found food one night, it kept coming back trying to get more.

The foamy has flown, and crashed. It flew fine right after take off, it had lots of power for climb, and had a nice steady feel to it. The trouble came the seccond I tried to make a turn. The wing bent about 15 degrees upwards the seccond I applied aileron and it fully folded when I tried to bring her back to level. It snapped right at where the wing meets the fuselage which is also where the wing spar stops. I am really really mad I broke the prop because it cost me $12 to buy 2 props online as I couldn't buy them locally, so it was essentially a $6 propeller!!!

During the rebuild I am going to make a one piece wing with a FULL LENGTH spar. Also I am going to add some reinforcement, because in my plan to save as much weight as I could, I made it too weak for flight.

Today I finished my 48" foamy yak. It was of my own design so well see soon how well of an airplane designer I am. It is about 32oz all up and will hopefully fly well with the E-flite Power 10/APC 11X5.5 I have on the nose. WebOCalc says it will hover but I have my doubts. Anyway with a wing loading of about 7.25 oz/square foot and 173 watts per pound it should fly nicely no matter what. If I am brave enough, the maiden flight will be tomorrow, but well see as I have other stuff going on too.

Last week my friend was over and saw the E-flite Power 10 that was sitting on my dresser and said, "this looks really cool, you need to buy a plane for it." Since I don't have the money for the E-flite Ultimate I was saving it for, I decided to make something out of foam. $6 later I walked out of the dollar-tree store with some foam. I have always wanted a DW Foamies Yak, so I decided to make a profile 3D Yak. The proportions are a little off, but all the major stuff is there. I wanted to spend as little as possible so I will be using some standard size servos that I had, hopefully after I get it all put together, it will be under 35 oz's. I am pretty sure I can make it as I have stripped off all the paper from the foam I dare and with it all on the scale, it reads about 32oz leaving a little lee-way for tape and glue. The wings do have spars in them, but they are on the bottoms of the wing so I don't have those ugly black spars on the top with the graphics.

Last week my friends little brother got a snowboard at a consignment store and since I like snowboarding A LOT, my friend asked me if I could fix it up for him. My first impressions of it were that it was not really going to be a big deal and I was mostly correct. There were a lot of little things that needed to be done, so I figured I could just take some pictures and post them here.

Mostly the edges were "ok" and since my friends little brother hasn't really snowboarded before I pretty much left them as they were. The most I did was smooth them out where they had been chipped or smashed, and sand/file all the rust and grit off. The fun came when it came to waxing since it had absolutely nothing on the base. This made it hard to get all the dirt and grit out of the base, snow is unbelievably dirty, because normally you can just heat up the residual wax and all the junk floats to the surface and they you can wipe it out. Also with a totally dry base like this one, it takes much more work to get that first layer of wax to truly melt into the base. After that I fixed all the chips in the top base and put some bindings on.

The bindings that I put on are just a cheap pair, they came off my spare snowboard, and since they are just a hare too small for my new boots, these bindings were my very first pair so they are on the small side, I figured what the heck and bolted them on.

Yesterday my Dad and I went up to the airport for the EAA's pancake breakfast. The weather was PERFECT, at 7:00 it was 60 degrees, no wind, and not a cloud in the sky. The flight school had all but 1 plane in the air and everybody was out doing something with their airplanes. I had a lot of bad pictures because I am trying to figure out how to get that nice prop blur without messing up the rest of the photo. I could have had some good ones, but they were either blown out or blurry. Oh well, I will eventually get it right, but for now it just means I have to go the airport more!

A few Weeks ago I sold my CX2 and that posed an interesting problem. I had acquired an Mcx and was using the Blade's LP5DSM to fly it so I had to find a new DSM2 Tx to fly my Mcx. I went over to the trader forums and picked up a nice used DX5e for a sweet price. The thing I like the best is that unlike the LP5DSM the rudder has less breakout force than the throttle allowing you to smoothly use the rudder without changing the throttle even a little bit.

Last week we returned from our vacation along the California and Oregon coasts. The weather was perfect and the sun was out every day with no rain. We stayed in Brookings,OR, and did lots of hiking, kite flying and bike riding. Best of all we took a jet boat tour up the Rouge River but sadly I forgot to grab my camera out of the motorhome when we left for the day.

Well this weekend I crashed my parkjet AGAIN. Seeing as how this is only my seccond airplane and before this I had no aileron experience I am very proud of myself and not so sad about the continual crashing.

But anyway here's what happened, the field I fly at, you have to face the sun to fly in the evening (mistake no.1) I thought if I went late enough I would be ok (mistake no.2) Now the sun was just below the trees and it was getting a tad dark, more like dusk though as it wasn't really getting dark. Here's mistake no. 3, I flew it smack dab in front of the super brilliantly bright sun and WHAM I got disoriented, as I was a tad blinded. while I was stunned it flew THROUGH a tree with a spectacular crunch, and once it popped out the other side, major control issues were present by the time I got "control" I was WAY out over a housing tract and freaking out. I BARELY got it back and just crashed it into the field as If I messed up the landing, I'd be back to where if I crashed, I could do some real damage. I know I shouldn't have given up, but I wasn't going to risk it.

I am going to repair and retire this model except if I am going to fly it at a proper club field.
