4 Attachment(s) The Joys of Spring!

Well Spring has sprung! And with Spring comes rain to Indiana. Now I don't mind a little rain now and then. Or even a Thunderstorm once in a while.

But the water in my drive was at one point over 3 feet deep! My lp tank started floating. a good 3/4 of my 1 acre lot is under water. and these pictures were taken the in the afternoon the day after the rain stopped.
My garage has several feet of water in it. I will have to see what all I have lost. But I had a lot of stuff in there.... oh well!

flew in yard for first time.

Well I got brave and flew my Slowstick in my backyard this morning. Got a total of about 10 minutes or so. It is funny the yard looks big untill you start flying a plane in it! Then it feels real small! I managed to stay out of all the trees. And did not break anything.
Any flight where the plane is not damaged is a good one in my book!
I would have flown longer but was getting tired and not feeling well. But had to try since there was no wind.
Next spring I will make sure the grass is cut short so I can rog and land easier.

Understanding What Ms Means
Discussion / Posted by 1987tc / Oct 04, 2007 @ 09:18 PM / 4,864 Views / 5 Comments / Reply
A friend of mine who also has MS has this on her Blog. While I never have any remissions and can not work anymore this still describes what it is like.
Hopefully this will help people understand a little better what it is like for me and others who have MS.
UNDERSTANDING WHAT MS MEANS

Having MS means many things change, and a lot of them are invisible. Unlike having cancer or being hurt in an accident, most people do not understand even a little about MS and it's effects on us; and many of those who think they do know are actually misinformed. In the spirit of informing those who wish to understand...

These are the things that I would like you to understand about me before you judge me:

Please understand that being sick does not mean I'm no longer a human being. I have to spend most of my day in considerable pain and exhaustion and if you visit I probably don't seem like much fun to be with, but I'm still me stuck inside this body. I still worry about school, and work, and my family and friends, and most of the time I'd still like to hear you talk about yours too.

Please understand the difference between "happy" and "healthy". When you've got the flu you probably feel miserable with it for a week or two, but I've been sick for years. I can't be miserable all the time, in fact, I work hard at not being miserable. So if you're talking to me and I sound happy, it means I'm happy, that's all. It doesn't mean that I'...Continue Reading
1 Attachment(s) New place to fly for me!
Discussion / Posted by 1987tc / Sep 09, 2007 @ 03:28 PM / 4,646 Views / 0 Comments / Reply
Well I am moving. Just to a nearby town. The serious upside is the house sits on an acre of mostly clear land. And if I walk out to the street and to the right about 25 feet there is a HUGE field that is all open farmland.

I have already asked and it is ok for me to fly electrics there.
Starting the cleanup and move tomorrow. My internet activity will be limited till it is all done.
But it will be worth it in the end!
Oh the garage is heated too. In the picture you can see a white car in the drive. That will help give you an idea of the size of the lot. I have outlined the property lines too.

Why am I the only one who flys here?
Discussion / Posted by 1987tc / Jul 31, 2007 @ 01:14 PM / 4,533 Views / 2 Comments / Reply
Here is a link to where I fly.
This post has pictures of my main flying site. It is located about 15 miles North East of Vincennes on hwy 67 and about 40 miles South East of Terre Haute.

As you can see there is a lot of room here and it is a nice place to fly about anything you could want.
The people here are very rc friendly and there are no issues with flying here.

Yet I am the only one who ever flys here.
Surely there must be someone with in driving distance who would like to fly here?
It sucks flying alone!

When is it time to hang it up for good?
Discussion / Posted by 1987tc / Jul 28, 2007 @ 04:52 PM / 4,613 Views / 2 Comments / Reply
I have been thinking a lot lately about this. I am not ready to stop flying completely. But I know that there will be a time when I can not fly anymore.

So what determines when it is time to stop? I know that if it is no longer fun then of course there is no point in doing something that is meant to be fun when it is not.

My desire to fly is a strong as it ever was. But my ability to fly has changed. Really fast planes are out of the question now. As are planes that are radicaly aerobatic.

It is ironic in a way that my choices in planes are starting to go backwards. Going to slower and easier to fly airplanes.
I have always enjoyed slowflyers but now they are becoming more of a requirement instead of a choice.

I am not up to flying more days then I am able to. So I want to make the most of the times I am feeling well enough. And that means planes that are easier to fly.
But I do not want to be at the point where all I can do is fly in circles and that is it.
So at what point to you hang it up?
Sorry for all the rambling.

I am not feeling well at all. So not by choice I am going to be taking it easy for a bit. I will post as I can. But it might be hit or miss for a while.

But I am NOT leaving the hobby or giving up flying.

Had a nice evening flight

Yesterday evening before dinner the wind didn't seem too bad so I grabbed my Slowstick and transmitter and headed for the park. Pulled up next to the fence under a tree and unloaded the plane and turned on the transmitter.
I then plugged in the lipo pack and set the plane on the ground facing the large grassy area I fly over.
Did a quick control check and yup everything wiggles and in the right direction too! ( always a plus!) throttled up a little. And then back down. Looked at the flag. It was blowing a little more then I would have preferred but seemed to be blowing the right direction. So I went to half throttle and the plane rolled about 2 feet and was climbing at about 45 degrees. I climbed up to about Buzz altitude ( 25 feet ) and throttled back. I cruised around at about 1/3 for a while. Did a loop and made some approaches and slow flybys.

The plane was getting moved around some but not too bad. And certainly nothing hard to control or adjust for.
I made a few passes with the plane weather veining about 20 degrees or so into the wind.
I did some more figure 8s and just generaly flew around. Playing with the throttle and and did a little hovering into the wind.
Finally decided it was time to come down when I felt rain drops on my face!
Went out a couple of hundred feet and started my approach pattern. Bringing the throttle back more on each leg.
As I turned on to final approach and lined up I brought power back to what would be a slow idle...Continue Reading
Need to find someone in my area to fly with.
Discussion / Posted by 1987tc / Mar 26, 2007 @ 11:14 PM / 4,922 Views / 0 Comments / Reply
I am still struggling with my MS and have realized that I need to find someone to fly with in my area.
I can no longer drive long distances. So they would need to be close or be able to come here. I have no shortage of good places to fly here. And if they are still learning to fly I would be happy to help.

Today I went to fly my Slowstick. Flying the plane was good. But I had some problems going back and forth to and from the car.
I realized that if something happened I could have a real problem.

I don't want a baby sitter. I want to find a flying partner. Kind of like you should not scuba dive alone.

It would help in staying motivated. And also not a bad thing to have someone there to land if I am not feeling well. Or if I have trouble seeing the plane.

Not to mention it gets reallllly boring flying alone all the time!
Hopefully someone will turn up in my area.

I recently order a couple of planes. The first one I am going to show here is the Nesail Cadet Acro. it is a 45" parkflyer that is well built and light.
Next is a comparison between it and my newest plane. A Virus ASP. The Virus ASP is the one I am thinking of sticking with for a combination of reasons including ( but not limited to) The ability to fly slow and yet be able to loop, roll and shoot touch and goes. And of course the ability to handle some wind.

I have to say that the construction on the planes from Nesail are top notch.

I want to say thank you

Recently I have been the blessed to receive an outpouring of compassion and friendship I never expected. As many of you know I not long ago sold off all of my hobby stuff. Planes, radio everything.

The reason behind this was of course my finding out that I have MS. At first I was extremely depressed and not at all hopeful about the future. Well that has changed. My health is still an issue. But I decided that instead of letting it beat me down I was going to do the best I could to be happy and enjoy life.

My life has changed forever. There are some things I am not and will not be able to do. But there are some things I can do.

And one of those is enjoy the friendships I have found in the hobby and with the people on this site that I have come to feel are friends.

There are some extremely generous people that are helping to rebuild the hobby for me. Gifts of planes parts etc. This means far more to me then I can say here. And there are far too many to name off here. A simple search will show you some of them. and there are more that have done things behind the scenes. To ALL of you I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart.
The friendship and compassion you have shown to me means more then anything.

It has brought my spirits up, way up. And anyone that knows someone who is going through something like MS knows how important that is to making life livable.

I will make good use of all the help and hope over time to get back to building and flying as close to what I was able to do before as I can.
Once again I want to say thank you to all concerned for what you have done and are doing.

Going to try and get back in.

My health is still not great. But I am going to give it all I can to try and get back into the hobby. At least in part. Hopefully in the near future my health will stabilize enough to do more.

Thanks to help from Dulcet I have a flyable Tigermoth. I hope to get back into building again later in the year after some medical treatment.
Keep your fingers crossed! I have been going through balsa and ca withdrawl!
